Nearly 200 Muslims Fired at Meat-Packing Plant After Walkout for ‘Insufficient Prayer Accommodations’

(Reuters) — Nearly 200 workers, mostly Somali immigrants, have been fired from a meat-packing plant in Colorado after staging a walkout to protest what they said were insufficient prayer accommodations, the company and Islamic advocacy groups said on Thursday.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said the workers were treated in a “discriminatory manner” by managers at the Cargill Meat Solutions [CARGIL.UL] facility in Fort Morgan, about 75 miles northeast of Denver.
Jaylani Hussein, a spokesman for CAIR, said in a YouTube video posted by the group that the workers objected to new restrictions on their ability to worship on the job, “which they had been granted for a long period of time.”

CAIR Muslim Brotherhood branch here in USA was responsible for directing workers to go on strike. I am seeing job opportunities now online for people who are seeking work.
 
Maybe if they had collectively bargained for “prayer accommodations” they wouldn’t have felt the need to walk out and been fired…

But seriously; if they want “prayer accommodations” at work - they should move to Saudi Arabia. This is ridiculous.

I work at a hi-tech company and some Muslims reserved a conference room for their prayers for a few minutes everyday. At other times, the conference room is used by other employees for their business or personal needs. This was done of their own initiative and the company was not involved.

I guess that such an arrangement is difficult for dozens of blue collar workers. Still, methinks that they could say their prayers in their lunch or rest breaks, perhaps in small groups at different times, in the parking lot perhaps. But demanding special accommodations and treatment is a bit much.

I applaud Cargill for not caving in at special demands and taking action only when the employees failed to do their work.

Considering the fact that the owners of the meat plant already had a contract with organized labor giving them exclusive bargaining rights- and that contract banned wildcat strikes- I don’t see where the company can give in on this. CAIR was out of line.

I’m not saying these people are right or wrong at this plant. But they are entitled to their way of life. I’m sure the same was said about Irish Catholics and eastern European Orthodox when they immigrated.
 
CAIR is one of those that need to be banned and sent out of the country. Muslim Brotherhood front on economic jihad.
 
It clearly states that worshipping on the job is a right they had for a long time. I wonder why it is only now that the plant is claiming that it interferes with workflow? Surely they could stagger prayer breaks and roster people accordingly so you don’t have masses going for a break. 🤷

Their prayer breaks take 6-7 minutes including ablutions and in an 8 hour shift they probably require two of those prayer breaks.

Where I worked, smokers took roundabout 5-6 minutes for smoking breaks where I used to work, whenever the need for a nicotine fix arose usually 3-4 times a day in some instances and smoking breaks are not factored into an employment contract or negotiated with employers i.e. they are getting paid for the time they are smoking.

Me as devil’s advocate: So if you were forced to work on a holy day of obligation, should I tell you to be quiet and just be American and assimilate to the anti-Christian society that we are unfortunately now a part of?

That’s what I don’t get. They had been accommodated for years. They used their breaks and lunch time. Then the company suddenly said “No more.” Why? Sounds fishy considering all that’s been happening lately. Was that the company’s way of getting rid of them?

At the local mosque here in Albuquerque (called the Islamic Center of New Mexico), they list the specific times when their prayers are said in the mosque. I’m not exactly sure about this, but I think many Muslims are very specific about when their prayers are to be said, with very little wiggle room. They could have very well done their prayers on their breaks - they were probably asking for their breaks to align with their prayer times. Unfortunately, as many businesses ask that breaks be the same every day, and only be taken with permission from the manager (along with needing the breaks be scattered) having the breaks align with the prayer times every day is generally not feasable - especially since the Muslim prayer times change daily, with the sun’s positioning. On the other hand, businesses are required to give every accommodation necessary for their employees’ health and religious needs.

I’m pretty sure all business in the Middle East doesn’t completely grind to a screaming halt at prayer times. Which would suggest there is at least some wiggle room.

I don’t believe all production is compatible with pausing in the middle of operation, machining, (meat is machined) time/temp sensitive production (food, plastics) run into trouble if you stop “the line” during operation.
 
I do not see discrimination. The only ones that were fired were those who engaged in an illegal strike. They were fired because they walked away from their job, not because they were Muslim. If I walked off my job in protest, my boss would consider it a resignation.
