About the Eastern Churches, Divine Liturgy, customs.

Is there any book that gives a solid explanation of the Churches of the East?

Thank you all so far for your information. 😃

You won’t find a decent single book to cover all the eastern and oriental churches. For the Byzantine Churches, however, Rev. Fr. Alexander Schmemman’s For the Life of the World: Sacraments and Orthodoxy is very informative. (The chapter on marriage is problematic, since it’s one of the major issues of difference between Byzantines in union with Rome vs in union with Constantinople & Moscow.)

If I may be so bold as to plug my own book, you might consider 101 Questions and Answers on Eastern Catholic Churches published by Paulist Press. It is not an in depth examination, nor is it equal in the treatment of all of the Eastern Churches, but it does provide a survey of the Churches and an examination of some of their traditions.

I’m gonna get into the mix here… I’ve used {as reference and for research} Fr. Taft’s book, “Liturgy of the Hours in East and West,” and I find that he has a very good grasp on the offices within the various traditions and their historical developement. Any comments regarding this one?

Deacon Ed, I’ve seen your book but never really picked it up. Now that I know you’re out here on CAF, I’ll give it a look. 👍

There is/was an excellent book published by the Melkites in Boston called A GUIDE TO THE DOMESTIC CHURCH. It explained the Divine Liturgy, the Sacraments as well as many of the customs found in the various Eastern churches.

I don’t know if it’s still available or not but I’d suggest you contact the IKON AND BOOK SERVICE in Washington, D.C. They may still have copies.

Here’s their link:

hope this helps…

American Eastern Catholics by Fred Saato (a Melkite priest) is meant to be a general introduction to the Eastern Catholic Churches in America. It discusses the tradition of the Eastern Churches very generally and briefly. It also discusses some of the problems that the Eastern Churches have to deal with in America.

You could also start with the encyclical Orientale Lumen by P. John Paul II.

I am looking at that book as well as these. Anyone read this besides the Author of the first one I list?:

For the Maronites- Fr Salim’s* Captivated By Your Teachings*.

The last i heard was that Captivated by your teachings was out of print. Is it available anywhere online to read?

I also refer often to Deacon Ed’s book.

I’ve found the three God With Us publications Light for Life helpful: Part One — The Mystery Believed, Part Two — The Mystery Celebrated, Part Three — The Mystery Lived.

The back cover says “Commissioned by the Eastern Catholic Bishops of the United States, Light for Life presents an overview of the faith for Byzantine Catholics. Drawing on all the forms of Holy Tradition, Light for Life expresses the historic proclamation of the Gospel in Three Parts…” and then talks about what the basic contents are for each of the three. The books are roughly 100 pages each.

I recently read Bread & Water, Wine & Oil: An Orthodox Christian Experience of God by Archimandrite Meletios Webber and loved it. Part I “LIfe as Mystery” has 7 chapters, and Part II “The Mysteries of the Church” has 7- one for each of the seven sacraments. Father Webber is Orthodox so it is written from within that community. That said, in under 200 easily devoured pages it gives an excellent presentation of the Eastern sacramental-liturgical world view in daily life and in the sacraments. amazon.com/Bread-Water-Wine-Oil-Experience/dp/1888212918

You asked for books, but if you haven’t seen the new Eastern Christian Media website they have some excellent materials up, and keep adding more. www.easternchristianmedia.com And I think Catherine Alexander 's interviews on Youtube with the monks from Holy Resurrection Monastery are very excellent. youtube.com/user/YourWordFromTheWise

Captivated By Your Teachings is available on Amazon - just checked.
