I’m having a strong debate on Facebook with a brother of mine who has strayed away from the church and thinks the pill is a benefit to women, I need a link to debunk him on his feelings!

He’s thinking if men can get coverage for Viagra, then women should get coverage for the pill.I’ve tried to tell him that Viagra treats a medical disorder, but that argument falls on death ears.

TIA

The pill does, in many cases, treat a medical disorder. I have a hormonal disorder, and my Nuvaring is the only thing keeping me from wanting a complete Hysterectomy.

Hormonal contraception reduces rates of ovarian cancer, and could possibly increase chances of breast cancer. Breast cancer is easier to screen for, diagnose, and treat early. I’d rather take my chances with breast than ovarian cancer.

The issue isn’t “debunking the positives of the pill.”

The bottom line is that in a fallen world, with imperfect bodies, even a pill designed to be primarily contraceptive will have positive effects, for example the reduction in ovarian and uterine cancer risk.

The REAL question is - “at what cost?”

I’ll relate this to something else - it has been shown that being culturally permissive toward abortion leads to a decreased crime rate ~20 years later. Okay that’s great - but at what cost? ~50 million people never got a fair shake at life, and for what - a reduction in crime rate? What kind of a tradeoff is that?

In the same vein - yes, most birth control pills will reduce ovarian and uterine cancer risk (not that it was all that high to begin with), but used with a contraceptive mentality, one loses one’s soul. So again I ask you - at what cost?

That is the mission-critical question.

Good reply, Athena. Also OP, has your brother considered any negative attributes of the Pill? Women who take the Pill have increased chances of bloot clots, and that is a WAY serious and life-threatening complication.

Here’s the thing,

You can not name ONE DRUG that does not have negative side effects. Not one. Viagra included.

Sure, it’s for a medical condition. How about treat the condition. ED is generally a biprodoct of something else. Poor circulation due to??? heart problems, diabetes, obesity?

As a female who has had to take the pill when there were no other options because I was nearly bleeding to death monthy, and only 21. Yanking my uterus was not a good option. Sometimes we do have to take the route of lesser damage. Bleeding to death monthly? Or deal with what the pill does. Neither are good. Death seems like a bad idea if you ask me.

Sometimes we really need a bandaid, until we can figure out better options.

Just be prepared to answer to: So do heart meds. Viagra has claimed several lives, In fact every FDA approved drug that has been recalled went in approved with major side effects what about those?

Is it morally wrong to take a drug if it could kill you? What about the weighed risks? Who has the right to weigh the risks?

I’m just curious.

Personally, I don’t see the pill as a solution to anything. A bandaid when there are seemingly no other solutions to some very serious situations? Yes. Sometimes we truly have to go with “better than nothing.”

Even with the rates of breast cancer nowadays?!

Ovarian cancer rates - 12.3 per 1000 women
Breast cancer rates - 121.9 per 1000 women

(per CDC data)

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women, behind only lung cancer.

How about the abortifacient side of the pill? It directly kills a human baby.

The pill is a lifesaver. I had very heavy bleeding… the make you anemic and exhausted type of bleeding. And it just wouldn’t stop. The pill was (and still is) a gift from God!!!

@ buffalo. Don’t you think that I discussed other optons with my doc. The other options severely hamper or totally impede a woman’s ability to get pregnant. Hormonal therapy is the only reversible option. I can only assume you are not a medical professional nor have you experienced heavy non-resolving menstrual bleeding.

Perhaps you could consult a Catholic, NFP-only doctor for your issues.

You’re not really a Catholic are you. I don;t know of a single priest that would tell me to choose the option that would likely leave me barren over the reversible option of hormonal therapy. Please go to whatever child/woman hating forum that would appreciate your kind of horrid anti-Christian advice.

Who in the world are you addressing and why? Nobody has posted anything that would prompt such a response.

By the way, this forum has rules for posting. I suggest you review them since your post above has broken a couple of rules.

In all fairness, a few posts have broken rules…including the ones bordering offering medical advise. The women who posted to this thread are being treated by their doctors, and should discuss these matters with their doctors. And we all know, whether we agree or disagree with the method to treat the ailments listed, that the Church itself allows hormone therapy for threatment of them. So it’s really up to the patient, along with their doctor, to drive the decision making process of their healthcare…not strangers online who don’t agree.
