Is it appropriate for a woman to wear a kitted hat at a mass service? I am cantoring and I don’t want to cause a scandal, but I am sick (with no replacement) and chilled and the hat is covering not only a horrific hair-day, but keeping me from getting chilled. If it’s inappropriate, I’ll ditch it though. Thanks guys!

I’ve seen knit hats, fancy hats and mantillas at both the OF and EF Masses.

Nothing wrong with what you describe.

All the stuff we read here about ‘veiling’ makes it seem that mantillas are the only acceptable things a woman can wear on her head at Mass but that is not the case. In the early 60s at this time of year you would have seen knit caps, kerchiefs, fancy felt or fur hats, berets, etc., etc… Wear your knit hat and get well soon.

Hading to church now guys. Thank you for your (name removed by moderator)ut and wishes for good health soon!😃

I’m sorry I didn’t see this.

Hope you got through it all

First of all, there is NOTHING wrong with a woman wearing a knitted hat to Mass… but I do understand wanting to not mess up decorum (I took off my shawl today to serve as Extraordinary Minister)

However, even if you are scheduled to Cantor, if you are not well, and not feeling well, that is a perfectly valid GOOD reason to miss Mass (and keep your germs at home where you can enjoy them!)

I’m sure that while you were out, you sanitized and all that, so, it’s a done deal:)

Oh I was very sure to stay back from people and use my hand sanitizer. It’s a good thing that I did show though, since there weren’t any other people who could have filled in. heh.

Again, thankyou all so much for the help. Sevice went OK with just a few minor messups due to my stuffy head!

They wouldn’t let me cantor no matter what I wore, unless there was a need to empty the church quickly after Mass:o

LOL
You’ll have a tough time then in a Byzantine parish as everything is sung. Unless you find one that recites the Liturgy, there are some out there. :D:D:D

To the OP:
I find that during the cold months (late fall, winter and early spring) its not a big deal if people wear (both men and women) some warming head gear during Mass. Even if the parish is heated, sometimes its just not warm enough especially at the beginning when the doors would have been opened several times as people come in. It shouldn’t be a big deal.

I know they say that everything is “sung” but I find it differently.

I find that it is more of a chant than singing. I can’t sing but I have no problem with the Chant.

Dress codes from place to place vary, which in some cases upset me. Take, for instance, the 5:00 pm Mass at my parish. It is mostly college students, and while most people dress modestly, there are some girls who will show up in Nike running shorts and tank tops with bra straps hanging out. So annoying!
But I see no problem with hats. I love hats, but never wear them to Mass. You def have an excuse to though.

You should have seen some of the hats I wore in the fifties and sixties. They would have given even Kate Middleton a run for her money. 😉

It’s not only annoying, but completely disrespectful.
