OK seriously, I’m not even a big dessert eater, but after reading this I WANT A CHOCOLATE FROSTED CAKE!!!😃 😃 😃 😃

**Quick question:

I made the cake and frosting… I’d like to do a crumb coat as suggested. Can I do that and then leave the cake at room temp? I don’t have room in my fridge for it:o**

But ideally I’d like to get the crumb coat out of the way today so i can frost it really quick in the morning. If I can’t do it tonight, can I do it in the morning and then frost? How soon after?

You should be okay overnight with a crumb coat. Thin about 1 cup of your frosting a bit before you do it (maybe 1 tblsp. more of liquid). You want it to spread easily and “crust over” over night. What this will do is allow for the actual seen layer of frosting not to get any crumbs in it - this is more aesthetic than for taste :). I rarely do a crumb coat unless I am planning on decorating the cake with frosting flowers and embellishments using my tips. As a matter of fact if you are using that Hershey’s cocoa buttercream frosting recipe it should be soft enough as is and you don’t need to do a crumb coat with it! You can just frost it all tonight and be done with it and it will be all okay 👍

I’m too tired now to crumb coat anyways, lol… plus, I figure chocolate cake, chocolate frosting… who’ll even be able to SEE the crumbs, lol. I put my energy into decorating some butterflies for the wall since I didn’t want Lily eating a bunch of artificial color…those didn’t turn out as well as I’d like because I had a massive headache at the time but I’m sure Lily will love them:)

My feelings exactly about this kind of cake and “crumb coating”. I decorate cakes for fun and the first I ever heard of “crumb coating” was here! I have been decorating cakes for 28 years without doing that and I get plenty of oohs and aahs for my cakes and my now 28 yo daughter has been decorating cakes for about 14 years with the same effect ( - : . It might be because we bake our cakes from scratch so they aren’t as “crumby” as cake mixes or because we live in the desert, I don’t know, just have never had a problem with crumbs in my frosting 🤷

The butterflies on the wall will last a whole lot longer too than any decorations you put on a cake! This is why you go to the store and buy cute little toys to decorate with. I have to post the picture of the last cake my daughter and I did for an event - a baby shower no less! (sorry it’s kind of big, my family is hollering at me to come play a game so no time to make it smaller 😊.http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm273/tapiocapudding3/100_1854.jpg

Thank you.

Those are a combination of “rock candies” and yogurt covered raisins put in a baggy with some black cake decorators icing color and shaken. The ideas take me longer than the decorating :D. Once I know what I am going to do most of my cakes only take 1/2 a day from baking to finished product - and yes, I make everything from scratch usually!

That cake was a chocolate wheat free cake but the frosting did have Crisco more because I wasn’t sure when we started if I was going to actually use some icing tips and bags and make flours or a shell boarder and I needed a stiffer icing than the Hershey’s one (and yes, I use the real brand name Crisco - about the only time we have shortening unless I make biscuits and I don’t do that often anymore)
RE: your creative side, you painted butterflies on the wall, that is creative!

I also used a ball pan and made two construction hats with that one but I don’t feel comfortable sharing the pictures because we used the last name of the family on them. Remember this was a baby shower cake - dad has or works in construction and mom was decorating the nursery in construction vehicles - this was actually for baby #3 with a 5+ year gap between the next youngest and this one and the first boy!
