As a Catholic I understand we cannot use Birth control as a way to prevent pregnancy. But I do have a serious question. I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 18 and I have never had a period on my own. I started taking birth control to make my periods start becaue it’s actually really unhealthy for a young woman not to have a period ever. When I got married, I got off of it immediaetly, and of course my periods ceased completely. I took some medicine to force my body to ovulate and we concieved. What I am wondering is after the baby is born, what can I do? I need to have a period and a cycle, but I also don’t want to block the possiblity of becoming pregnant again (even if I never have a period on my own). Is it sinful to take birth control even if I have a condition that prevents ovulation anyway? I feel kind of stuck in a hard place. I have tried natural things to bring on a period (Maca, vitex, you name it I have literally done it all) Does anyone know of anything that brings on a period and is a hormone but doesn’t prevent ovulation or kill an embryo? Thanks!

Edit: The medicine I took to make mysef ovulate is not something I can take on a regular basis. It is a heavy dose of hormones that made me feel crazy and did some other weird things to me. It is not recommended that women take them regularly.

You may well find that after having a baby and nursing your periods re-start naturally.

If not is there any reason why you cannot just let nature take its course until you next want to conceive ?

No. It’s not good to skip periods. What you get is thick uterine lining that can cause abnormal bleeding (not a period). Also, my doctor told me this exact thing (from a medical website): Amenorrhea (absence of periods) is often associated with lower estrogen levels. Lack of estrogen leads to bone loss and subsequent increase in risk for osteoporosis.

It is very important for women to have periods and regular estrogen levels. This is why I took birth control before.

This could work…nursing can do strange and wonderful things to a woman’s body.

My cycles changed after each pregnancy and the transition to nursing.

Yours can too and it might be worth looking into…I wouldn’t take hormones while I’m nursing anyway.

A lot of women don’t ovulate at all when they nurse and can go for months and months with no cycles.

It’s not something I would recommend doing if you want to avoid another pregnancy…but that is because it’s not a reliable method that anyone should count on.

However, if you don’t naturally ovulate anyway…it could work. It depends on how serious you are about holding off on another baby.

You could suddenly start ovulating…even way sooner then you expect…due to nursing and conceive another baby.

Bottom line…the Church doesn’t categorize using hormonal birth control (such as the pill) as a sin if it is used for a legitimate medical purpose.

You would not be sinning if you have been prescribed birth control for a purpose other then preventing a pregnancy.

It doesn’t sound like you are using the pill for contraception at all. Using synthetic hormones in order restore your normal estrogen cycle isn’t the same thing as using it to avoid a pregnancy. I’m not 100% clear from your explanation of your condition, but it even sounds like you might not be ovulating at all, so there would be no risk of an abortion with the pill. If you are ovulating while on the pill, and the pill is keeping your cycle regular, then you can count days to avoid a potential pregnancy and miscarriage. What you are describing sounds like a legitimate medical use of synthetic estrogen, and not birth control at all.

I think you have received some great advice, However, if you. need .more help, you could contact a Catholic, pro-life doctor through a Catholic hospital or contact The John Paul II :)center which specializes in such matters.

I agree with this. It sounds like the ONLY motive you have for taking the pill is medical reasons. That is not a sin at all.

I am no doctor, however, it does sound like you exhausted all other solutions and therefor need to take the pill
