Hello, friends. I have a troubling situation with my husband, and I am asking for your advice. As you know, today (Dec. 8) is the feast of the Immaculate Conception. I am a practicing Catholic, married to a non-practicing Catholic husband. I want to take myself and my children to mass this evening, since it is a HDO. However, my husband is having a fit that we are going to do this, because we have events scheduled every other night this week (CCD, Christmas concerts at school, etc.), and he is insisting that we have one night at home all together. Should I let the children stay home and just go by myself, or should I just ignore his tantrums and take everyone and go? My stomach is just in knots right now, and I’m having a hard time putting this whole dilemma into perspective.

Any advice is appreciated.

Thank you.

I can only tell you what I would do - I would take my kids and go to Mass. For me, it is about showing my kids that God is the most important thing in the world.

Stop on your way home from mass, pick up something that your husband really likes - a big pizza and a movie maybe?

Do you have the option of an earlier Mass at another Parish, at a hospital, etc? In our little town, the options were 8 AM, noon and 6 PM. Because of other commitments this evening, and a huge homework load for DS, we will sign him out of school for the noon mass.

Prayers for you!

No - to miss mass would be a sin. You are in charge of your soul and your chilrens soul. While you are at mass, pray that God will open your husbands heart for peace when you return home with the children.

To skip mass sends the wrong message to your children as well (providing they are old enough to understand what a Holy Day is).

Choose a different night to be at home; school stuff should come second to church stuff. 😉

You should take your kids for Mass. Don’t take it as a HDO but treat it as a day to celebrate something important - our Lady’s Immaculate Conception. Go to church and sincerely pray to the Lord to make the situation turn out right. The Spirit of the Lord works in wondrous ways. Nothing is impossible to the Lord!

If your children are below the age of reason, they have no obligation to attend Mass. If your children have received First Holy Communion, they have an obligation to attend Mass.

God comes first. You know the right thing to do.

I think that your husband has every right to be upset. A Catholic family should spend time together. I also think that you are right. A Catholic family must honor the holy days of obligation. My suggestion is to give up something else in the next days, make sure that your children do not grow up with greed for activities at risk of severing relationships with God and the family.

Thank you for your replies. Yes, my children are of age (all grade school/high school), and they need to attend. I really don’t know what we could cut out this week- CCD is Wednesday night, the older children play in the pep band another night, and attendance is part of their grade. They also perform in their Christmas concert another night, and their teacher will not be happy if they miss the Christmas concert.

Mother nature may make it necessary for me to miss, husband or no husband hissy fit. We’re supposed to get freezing rain and snow this afternoon, now.

If your children have receive their First Holy Communion, then they also are obligated to attend Mass, and it is your responsibility to get them there. If not then they can stay home with him.
