Need advice on personal/private revelation vs public

As a Mormon who frequents Catholic activities on a regular basis, I continue to wrangle with how LDS feel that any calling or position they get, is something akin to personal revelation from God, is this true private revelation or just human inspiration based on who they think is best? My faith in the LDS is gone of course, having figured out that the catholic faith is the way forward. On another note, LDS always claim continuing public revelation, I find that suspect today.

I’ve read some of the Catholic Answers tracts on personal revelation, public and so forth and even read new advent’s entry on revelation, this all tells me that I need to be very careful about making sure that whatever personal revelation I receive is valid and not illicit. Honestly LDS revelation is very suspect, I can no longer accept it. I’d love some thoughts on revelation from the Catholic perspective. I hope this is the correct forum to post this topic as it is spiritual in nature after all. 🙂
 
Perhaps you’ve already read this in an tract, but the reason public revelation is final is that Christ is God’s final revelation to man, so everything Christ taught and passed on to his Apostles is what we believe. No new doctrines can be added to that which has been given by Christ. So, there’s no ongoing revelation since it’s not a matter of receiving revelations since no new ones can be given. Does that make sense?

Private revelations come under the authority of the local Catholic bishop, who, if he feels it’s needed, investigates them to see if they agree with the Church’s teachings, if they are meant for the person receiving them only, and if they are, if meant for the faithful, worthy of belief. He, nor any other bishop, priest, deacon ever claims to receive private revelations that change Church teaching, since Church teaching is final and unchanging since it is what Christ gave to his Apostles and nothing else.

There are no new Apostles of the rank of the 12 Christ appointed. They were the founders of the Church under Christ. Other apostles mentioned in Scripture were under them, the meaning of the word being “sent” not appointed directly by Christ to be the foundation of the Church. This is why St. Paul called himself “one born out of time” in that Christ called him apart from the other Apostles. St. Paul’s election by Christ was affirmed by the other Apostles, but he was the last. No others had that privilege or responsibility.

I hope I haven’t over-explained or not given the kind of answer you’re looking for. Please let me know where I haven’t “gotten” what you’d like to know. :tiphat:

I suggest you talk to a priest, while the advice on here may be well intentioned, it may also be incorrect or not properly explained. I would get a copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church also, as that has very good explanations for what Catholics believe. Prayers for your journey, God Bless, Memaw

I read the Catechism on my kindle on occasion, I’m in like paragraph 640. At some point when I visit a parish next, I’ll have to see what a Priest might have in mind on the subject. But so far, I’ve been reading sayings of the saints and some great apologetics as well, even some heartfelt prayer helps.

You don’t have to believe private revelations, but I do ,because it gives me a greater insight into the Supernatural world.
