I tried looking though some of the threads here, but couldn’t find a case similar to mine.
I think my husband and I have both reached the end of our ropes with each other. I don’t think that either one of us wants to end the marriage. Let me give you a little backgroun on our situation. We have been married for less than a year. We purchased a house and moved in about 3 months ago. It turns out that the house needd a lot more work than we had anticipated. My husband is also very stressed out right now about his job. They’ve been threatening to lay him off for over a year now.
I mention al of this because these are the main things that are causing stress in our life, and I believe that is the reason for most of the fighting. But, we fight about EVERYTHING. It could be the littlest thing (like folding laundry) or the biggest thing (like what major house project needs to be tackled next).
I will admit, I am an extreme perfectionist and hold the belief that you can do anything if you put your mind, heart, soul, body and prayers into it. My husband is the exact opposite…not a perfectionist and believes that somethings are just not possible to accomplish. I have been trying very hard to let some things slide, and it is not easy for me since this is the way that I was raised. I never recieved help on homework and got chided for recieving B’s on a report card, etc. For example, laundry is one thing that I have given up control (yes, I know I’m a control freak as well) on. He has different way of doing it than I do, but I typically don’t bother him about it. It works.
And, when things go wrong, I get upset, especially on the things that I have given up control with. Sometimes very upset. Using my laundry example, let’s say that I need to wear a suit to work (at least once a week…so not uncommon) and he just didn’t get to it. When I mention it to him, it is somehow my fault that that load of laundry didn’t get done. This week, the reason was…well, you didn’t need one last week (exception to the rule), so how was I supposed to know. But, when I ask him specifically week after week, I nag. All I am looking for is an appology and a promise to try better next week. But, there’s always an excuse. And, if I surpress my “annoyed” feelings, then they just fester and I blow up on the weekend for everything that happened during the week.
Of course, I can’t really give his point of view. But, since there are a lot of instances similar to this, and based on conversations we’ve had, I think I can get close. He thinks that he can never do anything right and that I don’t appreciate anything that he does. So, why even try if he’s just going to get it wrong anyway.
And, when we are toghether we are on guard b/c we don’t want to start yet another fight. He has told me that he’s tired of waking up wondering if there’s anything that I can get angry about today. And, I’m tired of wondering if I’m going to upset him if I ask him to do something for me or if I tell him that I’m upset about something.
We never fought like this when we lived in the apartment, and I’m not sure why that is. It could be the stress due to the house, but it could also be b/c we had just got married at that point.
Does anybody have any advice for us on how to deal with this? Is there anyone who went through a similar situation that can give me words of encouragement?
