Hi!
I understand, mostly from internet sources, that Essential Oils are beneficial to various ailments such as arthritis, hair loss, asthma, eczema, etc.
I would appreciate advise from anyone familiar with EO and their uses especially in helping stop hair loss and promoting growth. I know next to nothing on this topic.
Thank you.

Unfortunately I think this may fall under medical advice.

There are stores that sell essential oils, but if you’re worried about pushy salesmanship I would try doing a few Google searches to find what you need first. Amazon seems to be a pretty good place to buy.

Thanks for your advise.

I won’t give any advise regarding the oils themselves, but in the US my concern is those using them are often also into various New Age type activities. I would be cautious in your research and advise that you are not receiving alternative spiritual practices in application instructions. Any talk of “energies” or “improved emotional well being” are often signs that other spiritualities may be involved.

Good luck with your research.

I use essential oils for myself, pets and livestock. God gave us a wonderful supply of natural remedies that have been used successfully to treat many things since the beginning of time. Research online; there are many good sources out there, you can check with local health food stores (they may be able to help you find a knowledgeable “essential oilest” . IF you decide to use them- buy from a reputable source, pure and organic.
The wise men presented Frankincense and Myrrh to our Lord and both are powerful oils that have many uses.

That would not do at all of course. All I want is to go buy something that will help me.
Anything else , I walk away!
Thank you for alerting me to that possibility.

Thankyou ,Dee Burk for your wise words .I was given an infraction here for recommending oils to someone who was sick . I was told I was giving medical advice .

I am still on the planet because I am sure it was the Lord Himself directed me there, when I was ill, and being made more so by pharmaceuticals . I would only recommend those which I have used myself over a long time and have been useful to me .🙂

My daughter is fond of using them. They are expensive. The lavender does seem to help with sleep and she uses the peppermint for upset stomachs.

I’m not claiming they work as claimed, but while we were visiting her at Christmas time, her husband came down with a very severe cold. Nothing in that house is particularly sanitary, as there are kids and a dog running around sharing germs, so she concocted a mixture of the oils supposed to boost the immune system, and gave it to us in a capsule. We were there a week, even when he had a fever, and not one of us (her, kids, DH & I—or dog) got sick. I was quite amazed, but I cannot say it was the oils for sure.

All you can do is buy the one you want and try it.

God made them for us to use,and they work if used in the right way .

The same goes for opium and coca.

If an herbal preparation is strong enough to be medicinal, it’s strong enough to cause harm, and with any medicine, one should be concerned about dosages.

Oil of wintergreen is very, very dangerous.

“The oil is UNSAFE to take by mouth. Taking wintergreen oil or large amounts of wintergreen leaf can cause ringing in the ears, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, stomach pain, and confusion.”

“Children: Wintergreen leaf and oil can be poisonous for children. Taking 4-10 mL of wintergreen oil by mouth can be deadly. Don’t even use wintergreen oil on the skin of children less than 2 years old.”

webmd.com/vitamins-supplements/ingredientmono-783-wintergreen.aspx?activeingredientid=783&activeingredientname=wintergreen

4 mL is NOTHING–it would be so easy to fatally overdose a child.

I think if essential oils cured baldness there would be a whole lot fewer balding men in the world. Just my opinion.

Exactly! That’s what concerns me about them. Without adequate regulation, untrained and uninformed users of essential oils may concoct some recipe that ends up being hazardous. One must be very careful in using them. Personally, I think there may be some benefit for helping one boost their immune system, but I think there is way too much emphasis on them being used in cases where clearly, modern medicine should be sought. They are not antibiotics nor can they take the place of back surgery (one of my friends was advised on facebook to use essential oils on her husband who slipped on ice, hit his back on a concrete step, and tore a vertebrae )!

Ha ha! You’re SO right. Women get thinning hair and baldness, too; just sayin’. Homeopathy claims to cure many illnesses, too, but AFAIK, not genetic pattern baldness.

Thank you for the links on the dangers of essential oils; I shared the links and also requested our local library get this book for reference:

Essential Oil Safety: A Guide for Health Care Professionals-, 2e

Price: $94.95

I actually tried oregano oil (and tea tree oil) for toenail fungus and it irritated the skin around the nail. I don’t think it helped kill the fungus much, either. I got tired of ineffective Rx treatments from my dermatologist. Diluted bleach soaks helped a lot, though. After 10 yrs, I will not need to wear a bandaid all summer on my toe to cover the unsightly nail!

Yeah, but tea tree oil mixture is great against lice and biting flies on my goats. 😃

As with anything, you must research, use it properly and keep these things away from children. I never tell other people to use them or treat any conditions (ie medical advise), but if someone asks, i will tell people what i use and how well it did or did not work for me.

Some years ago, I committed a pretty major boo boo with regard to home doctoring.

One of my beloved bloggers had praised the effects of zinc tablets on stopping colds. I bought some and dutifully dosed myself.

Some years later, I discovered that zinc overdoses (particularly with nasal sprays) have been implicated in about 100 people permanently losing their sense of smell.

webmd.com/vitamins-supplements/ingredientmono-982-zinc.aspx?activeingredientid=982&activeingredientname=zinc

Ever since, I’ve been more and more skittish of over-the-counter home remedies and taking medical advice from people without medical training.

Talk to your doctor or nurse line before following internet advice involving anything more complicated than a hot moist washcloth.

Make sure you are evaluated for medical causes before trying to self treat with essential oils. By the way, I have hair thinning problems and I can assure you that essential oils will not do anything for you.

I echo this. I use essential oils for various things…from making things smell nice, to achy joints, to skin conditions…and some are very effective. But so far none I know of can fix male pattern baldness or genetic baldness.

If hair is thinning for some other reason, best speak to a dr or nutritionist and get to the root of the problem. 😉

I have heard bergamot is good for hair when rubbed (diluted) into the scalp.

There are some things that actually help with thinning hair, often diet related, but truly if you are not very elderly and are losing hair, do have your health looked over.

and as with all medicines DO keep them away from children.

Be cautious. I hear a lot of wild claims about oils from some of the people I know that use them. Unlike regular meds that are required by the FDA to show proof of efficacy and regular safety checks in manufacturing, there is no regulatory body that guarantees oils and supplements even contain what they claim, and in many consumer reports-type investigations on supplements and homeopathy other (unreported) ingredients and incorrect potency is often discovered.

I get the point.
