This is the creed that the Pastor at my program wants us to say everyday. I never say it because it doesn’t sit well with me. Does anyone else see where I am coming from? (For those who don’t know, I am a Catholic and I am bound legally and circumstantially to this Pentecostal Program - Fortunately will be soon completed)
But the pastor says that those who disagree with this have been misguided and their minds are clouded by wrong teachings and lies of religious people. I bold-texted the parts that I don’t agree with.

I am
A born-again Son
of Father God
Twin brother of the King of Kings.
A chosen people, a royal priesthood,
a Holy nation. I stand Holy, righteous
and free from accusation
. I am sealed in the
Holy Spirit, and have inherited all things
from my Father. I am an agent and ambassador
of the Kingdom of Heaven
,
an bring life wherever I go. This is who I am
This is who I will always Be.
In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Did any of the pastor’s higher up ever approve this creed?

First off… you already have a creed. I don’t like the fact that you are being forced to say another creed.

We all choose a “creed” to live out our lives…it’s the way we see the world and live in it.

I’d say that the biggest problem with the creed is that it is so lacking (not surprising since the catholic has the fullness of what God has revealed and other religions don’t).

I personally would not submit to this creed.

As a matter of fact…when someone does submit to another creed other than our own … it’s a move of leaving the faith.

God bless

Certainly, don’t recite a Creed you don’t believe in.

You pretty much bolded all the parts that I would have questions about as well. Although, I’m less concerned about the “I am an angent and ambassador of the Kingdom of Heaven.”

But, yeah, calling ourselves the “twin brother” of Jesus? That’s a bit problematic. “Brother” is fine. But “twin”?

As this is a non-Catholic place, it’s difficult to expect them to have a Creed that is perfectly acceptable to Catholics. Just fulfill your obligations as best you can without professing belief in things that which Catholics do not believe.

It wouldn’t sit well with me either. Our Church has two ancient creeds. I wouldn’t say this one, as I am not interested in how some other church has tried to reinvent the wheel. I wouldn’t give a second thought to the pastor either. You will always be on the outside of this little club so long as you are Catholic.

Yes! They all say it. And he says that its all Biblical. But to me, it seems he just threw a bunch of scripture together mixed with his own ideas. What I dont understand is he explicitly teaches sola scriptura, but where in the Bible does it say that we are the twin brother of the King of Kings? Im pretty sure it doesnt unless I missed that part. Anyway, I dont ever say the creed - while they are saying it I usually say the Our Father & Hail Mary.

What I dont like is how he leads some students to believe that once they were “saved” at the alter call with the sinners prayer, now they are Holy Righteous and free from accusation. He teaches that we are to “claim the righteousness of Christ”
  • My whole thing is, if we are "holy, righteous, free from accusation, and saved once and forever - as “you cannot lose your salvation” then why do we need a Savior???
I have mixed feelings. Because I see people, like the pastor, who sincerely love Jesus and are Christians, yet the false teachings are absurd. Are these people to be condemned for perverting the word - in other words, is their salvation valid even though they are mostly anti- catholic? This is something I think about often - I believe that God is just and merciful - but this still confuses me. 🤷

I like the overall Christian conviction-affirmation of the prayer…but the words are theologically…imprecise at best…and…erroneous at worst.

If you can…clarify this aspect of your situation? Is this a non-Catholic pastor/program?..If so, how are you bound if you are Catholic? If you can’t or don’t want to elaborate…I understand.

Lastly…you must listen to and follow your conscience…while remaining in charity to the Pastor and other participants. You also might discuss it with a confessor priest.

I have no problem elaborating. 😃 I fell away from the Church and my Catholic background years ago. I took many wrongs paths in life. Having no Spiritual foundation in Christ, I became an addict and slave to my addiction. When it was at its absolute worse, I called on God and He delivered me - Quite amazingly - At the time I didn’t practice any Christian-Catholic faith - Nothing. I cant be negative to this place because I feel God brought me to this program which reconnected me with Him, which led to my reconnecting with the Catholic Church. The journey has been amazing - However it is a 9 month program and I had some legal issues - the courts agreed on letting me use my time in this regeneration program as time served against my charges - Which is a miracle. One judge actually threw my whole charge out completely. So I believe that it was meant for me to come to this place because I feel sometimes that things of the lesser good are ultimately for the greater good. But now I must finish this program for my legal issues and secondly, they help provide ways to get back into school, housing etc. So I don’t want to give the Program a bad name, but they are a** very Pentecostal Program** and many are Anti-Catholic - **This however has not changed my faith or belief in the Catholic **Church.

There are a few statments in your OP that I would ask that you clarify. First is this creed recited in a Catholic Church at a Mass?
the Pastor at my program wants us to say everyday.
What program - does not sound like Mass…am I correct?

Please explain - is the within the Catholic Church?
But the pastor says that those who disagree with this have been misguided
If this is within the Catholic Church you can consider finding another parish,

We agree.
of Father God
Agree with reservations: Trinitarian.
Twin brother
of the King of KingsNo such scripture
A chosen people, a royal priesthood,
a Holy nation.
Scriptural, so we agree
I stand Holy, righteous
and free from accusation
.🤷 Very conditional agreement. I would have offered something more about God’s mercy. This sort of feeds the ego.
I am sealed in the
Holy Spirit, and have inherited all things
from my Father.
Agree with reservations.
Can lead to a name it and claim it prosperity type faith.
I am an agent and ambassador
of the Kingdom of Heaven
,
an bring life wherever I go.We can agree with this, based upon Matthew 28: 19-20
This is who I am
This is who I will always Be.
In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Noble profession, but infers OSAS which is a doctrinal error.

I suggest that you spend the time praying the

APOSTLES’ CREED:***
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting.
Amen.

And perhaps spend some time looking into the following very good analysis of the The Nicene Creed (with Scripture references)

Just saw your post before mine. I suggest finding another way. A local Catholic Charities, a local Catholic preist, a close and trusted Catholic friend. If you desire is to return fully to the faith - I pray you find a Catholic advisor to assist you.

The theology is very poor.

Holiness is a decrease in sin and an increase in virtue. Only God is perfectly holy. The claim to holiness therefor should be used with caution, in the humility of knowing who God is compared to our own weakness.

The Bible says that we will all be accused of our sins at the end of our lives.

We inherit all things only after we complete this life, if we are judged to have been the good and faithful servant. The inheritance of eternal life and the ressurection of our bodies comes only at the end of time. The Bilbical view of salvation is that it is a past event, is happening in the present, and will be completed in the future.

We Have Been Saved

But God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us,
even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),
(Ephesians 2:4-5)

We Are Being Saved

Without having seen him you love him; though you do not now see him you believe in him and rejoice with unutterable and exalted joy. As the outcome of your faith you obtain the salvation of your souls. (1 Peter 1:8-9)

We Will Be Saved

*Besides this you know what hour it is, how it is full time now for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed; (Romans 11:12)

**Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; **(Philippians 2:12)

If any man’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire. (1 Corinthians 3:15)*

Why are you bound legally to attend a Pentecostal program? I’m assuming by “Pentecostal,” you mean Pentecostal Protestants. If a Catholic priest is making you say this, then he is the one that needs correcting, not you.

For those who do not understand. RMU is in a court mandated faith based program which is not all that uncommon as NGOs step up to offer alternatives to drug sentencing. 🤷

As one who corresponds often with Catholics in prison, what he is experiencing is fairly common in most of the Faith Based Programs both in and out of prison because they are almost all run by fundamentalist-evangelical groups that shape their programs around whatever beliefs their particular faith community adheres to and quite often do not consider Catholics to be Christians and/or make a point of opposing Catholic teachings and target Catholics for proselytizing away from their faith.

RMU is doing very well (he and I stay in touch both here on CAF and by mail) and IIRC only has a few weeks left in this program. It has been difficult for him, but at the same time he is growing in his conversion and deepening of his Catholic faith.

Please continue to pray for him and all those who have fallen afoul of things that land them in such situations or in prison.

Hang in there RMU! You’ll be back at Mass soon and can begin to really live out our most holy faith. 👍

Good for you RMU. Do not say this creed and hang in there, you have almost completed this program and can bid it good bye.

Embrace the Truth, pray always !

Hang in there…RMU. You are certainly in our prayers. I will also light a candle for you at the adoration chapel in my parish.

Just a question…have you been to confession? When can you start receiving the Eucharist again?

I can understand their dilemma at least in part as I have found similar things while working in UK prisons.

There seems to be a tacit approval on the part of some in the prison establishment that anything homogenaically (hope I spelled that right) Christian is good for all Christians. While I wouldn’t disagree with a lot of it there are some elements to which a Catholic shouldn’t be expected to agree with, whether pastor or prisoner; for example, ‘ecumenical’ services which include Holy Communion from a non Catholic pastor.

Thankfully the Church has stood up to such abuses and insist that Catholic prisoners should be entitled to Catholic ministry and sacraments.

Sometimes God can lead us to and through something just to learn how NOT to live/act/believe/etc. he knows your heart and what you can and cannot handle. If a trial will end up with you having a stronger faith and/or a closer relationship with Him, then not only would it make sense for him to allow you to go through it, it makes sense for him to even lead you to such a trial.

In your particular case, the blessing seems twofold. Not only are you learning and growing in your own faith by questioning things, but you are being delivered from your previous state of problems. Sounds very much like it was meant for you! 🙂

👍 Yep, that’s exactly it.

RMU does not have access to Mass to the sacraments right now, but he’s hanging in there and like I said, doing quite well. One thing is sure, he is learning a ton about the Bible and learning to spend his time reading it, while also learning to read what is there, and not what the program folks tell him is there. (Welcome to private interpretations 101 ) Plus he’s learning the value of his personal prayer life, which is a very important aspect of his Catholic faith that will help him be the best Catholic he can be far beyond this program and time in his life.
