As described in John 10:3, “The gatekeeper opens it for him, and the sheep hear his voice, as he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out,” I personally believe you should call a person by name when you see them or wish them something. I know there is nothing wrong with just saying “hi,” but I believe to treat everyone like Jesus (which we are called to do), we should call everyone by name (if you know their name). It is also just a sign of respect for the person. What do you think about it?

Some of us are embarrassingly bad at connecting names and faces. 😊

I think that would be a great idea…

Except I constantly forget other people’s names, including close friends I’ve known for years! 😃

According to Dale Carnegie, “The sweetest sound a person ever hears is their name”. Gotta admit it makes me feel special. So, if I remember it, I use it.

Action without a name, a “who” attached to it, is meaningless.

St. Jerome

The flip side of this is when you know the other person’s name but they don’t know yours. It gives them a supremacy over you when they use your name.

For example, when young as a grocery store employee I had to wear a nametag with my first name on it. I hated it when customers would call me by my name when I didn’t know theirs.

OR if someone calls you by your first name when they should use your title, like a child/teen to an adult.

On the other hand, I work at a Catholic hospital and often get to daily Mass. Since I am wearing a nametag again, I LOVE when the priest (in persona Christi) offers me Holy Communion by name.

Just my :twocents:

Really? I always make sure I use clerks names or whomever when they wear a name tag, I’ve never been treated like they resent it.

I’m always amazed at people in businesses who use first names for someone they don’t know. I always use Mr. or Mrs. or Ms. when I am speaking to someone on a business level. As a nurse, I ALWAYS ask a patient if I can call them by their first name before doing so. I think it shows respect.

Actually, one of our EMHC got into lots of trouble for using peoples names when distributing the Precious Blood, so I’m surprised that a Priest would do that…

I am not great with names and even after knowing someone for a long time will sometimes have to stop and think about their name! But yes, I believe people like being called by name. 🙂

I thought I was the only one that did this.

I was talking to a person to check on an order. She drove me :whacky: saying my name in every sentence.

This. I think at the beginning and end of a conversation (unless it’s a long one) is plenty.

I always hated being called by name. Absolutely despised it. Even though I knew people were just trying to be polite it felt like people were making fun of me for having the unfortunate first name that I do. (Most people think its ok, I think it’s horrible.). Then in college I’d had enough and started going by my middle name. Ever since then I have finally understood why people use names to be polite and why people like hearing others use their name.

Sadly though, I am horrible with both names and faces.

I too am very bad with names and faces…
however making the effort to use a persons name as soon as they tell it to you, and again soon after, genuinely helps you to remember their name. - it’s all to do with the way memory works.
