I’m sorry if this is the wrong forum to ask this question, but my family and I are desperate. At least it feels that way every time we leave Mass on Sunday. We moved to the Diocese of St. Augustine, FL 3 years ago, from the very conservative Diocese of Arlington, VA. I won’t go into the details, but these are the most Protestant Catholic Churches I’ve ever attended (tried 4 so far), and nothing like the very reverent NO masses we always attended in VA.

I was hoping that anyone familiar with this Diocese could point me towards a more traditional Parish with a reverent NO Mass. I know of only one TLM in the entire Diocese (about 45 minutes away), but really that’s not what I’m looking for, and would be my last resort before leaving the Diocese all together to attend an SSPX Mass closer to home (yes, we are that desperate).

Thank you for any help!

Is Ocala too far away? They started having the TLM this past Sunday. Best to check with some of the folks from there regarding up to date info. Likewise, Latin Mass in Sanford @ St. Thomas More church (SSPX) each Sunday at 9:00 AM. Though the schedule for next Sunday (4th Sunday of Advent) will change as Mass will be at 4:30 PM for that particular Sunday and also we will have a midnight sung Mass for The Nativity. Fr. Trinh, a former Novus Ordo priest, is now the pastor & regular celebrant of this chapel; stthomasmoresspx.com.

Hi EddieArent and thanks for the reply. I live in northeast St. Johns Co., between Jacksonville and St. Augustine. I know I’m about 2-2 1/2 hours from Orlando. I’m not sure where Ocala or Sanford are, but I’ll google them.

Hi again, Ocala and Sanford are both about 2 hours or so away from us, really too far to travel every Sunday, but I would love to visit there sometime. The church looks beautiful. Anyone else able to help with a reverent NO mass in Jacksonville/St. Augustine, FL?

I would give anything to have a weekly TLM only 45 minutes away. I would go there if I were you. Sitting through a banal and irreverant NO week after week starts to take its toll. With the TLM, you know what you’re getting. Go with it, it’s only 45 minutes away. Or go to the SSPX chapel if it’s closer. There’s nothing wrong with going there.

👋 Hello rich1lenore! I live in Orange Park. I drive to downtown Jacksonville to attend Immaculate Conception which is the Church you mentioned that has the only Tridentine Mass in the Diocese. You should make a visit. For me it is about a 20 minute drive, almost all Interstate, 295 North to I-10 East to 95 North. For you it should be 95 North and it shouldn’t take too much longer. The Tridentine Mass is at 8:00, but usually I go to the 12:00 Mass. It is reverent & on the first Sunday of the month, the Mass is in Latin/English. They offer Confession before every Mass, which I love. There are several Churches closer to home (one is only 5 minutes away!), but none are like Immaculate Conception. Here is their website: www.immaculateconceptionjax.org.

Other than the fact that they are schismatic…

Other than the fact that they are schismatic…
Other than the fact they are not… The Holy See has said time and again they are not, and Pope Benedict XVI recently said he won’t speak of it as such.

I can’t help, because I know nothing about florida, but i feel your pain, exactly. I live in the diocese of Arlington, and absolutely love it. However, 9 months out of the year, i find myself in the diocese of Stockton, CA for school. I know exactly how you feel. Its a horrendous and painful change from the beauty of Arlington to the rampant liberalism out here. I finally managed to find what must be the only conservative priest left in California just a short walk from campus, so I’m lucky. I wish the exact same kind of luck to you, too.

Actually, I don’t think there’s one letter or document to support what you are saying. The Vatican simply doesn’t usually speak to the SSPX priests. In fact the only thing from an office of the Magisterium regarding the priests of the SSPX is this: latin-mass-society.org/laitysspx.htm

I so wish people would stop quoting magazine/newspaper articles as authoritative.

Well, that’s a slight exaggeration. There are many faithful priests in California, you just have to know where to look for them. Arlington was very nice when I visited though!

You’d be surprised. One of my professors heads to Rome all the time to do research at the Vatican Library, and he’s assured me the SSPX is more “established” at the Vatican than most people would care to believe. Other than that, I do not care to get in thread number 3,548,723 arguing about whether good Catholics can go to SSPX Masses. I’ve read much on the subject, and my answer is a very common answer, (yes) and I’ll leave it at that.

I had the same problem as the OP, except I’m in the Diocese of Richmond. Every Latin-Rite Catholic Parish in the area was more Protestant than the Methodist community that I attended prior to converting and they were fairly liberal in theology! The only choice I had was to sit through heresy every sunday, attend a Greek Orthodox parish w/o Sacraments. However, God showed forth His amazing grace.

I discovered a Maronite Catholic parish in the area and it completely blows any Latin liturgy I’ve seen out of the water, even TLMs that I’ve seen on TV. The Eastern Catholic Churches really are the Catholic Church’s “best kept secret,” but I wish more people knew about them.

I’m contemplating a Canonical transfer, and becoming a Maronite Priest, God willing.👍

So if there are any Eastern Catholic parishes in your area, you should definitely attend a Divine Liturgy there if you can. You won’t regret it. Many Eastern Catholics reject all these liberalizations in the liturgy and of their faith, however there have been some exceptions, sadly.

I, too, am in the Diocese of Richmond. Following my observation of the liturgical deterioration of the diocese from one end to the other, I have not felt at home–and since coming to school in the Diocese of Charlotte, I seem to have found a home there. I plan on entering seminary for Charlotte once I graduate college.

Bear 06 - Thanks for the informative link, I thought the Sacraments of Penance and Matrimony under SSPX were suspect and that confirmed it.

I also have to agree that the Novus Ordo can be very “trying” in most of FL. I moved to Arlington, VA (where it is very good) and I can understand the culture shock rich1lenore is experiencing. My only advice is to “shop around.” 😦

I would reference Father Zuhlsdorf’s blog, What Does the Prayer Really Say, for the issues that have existed in Florida regarding the TLM. Apparently, the Diocese of St. Augustine simply does not care much for the TLM.

I would second the earlier suggestion to find an Eastern Catholic parish in the St. Augustine-Jacksonville area.

Use the following link to get the address and phone number of the Maronite Catholic Church in Jacksonville.

I’m kinda new here, but not to the Faith. In my 52 years of walking the planet, I’ve only been a member of 2 parishes, the second for over 40 years, thankfully my diocese is very conservative.

My question is this. Why the heck doesn’t somebody up the Chain of Command tell these rogue parishes and priest to simply STOP IT. :tsktsk:

The true rogue parishes are the ones here in Florida lead by heretics. The sad situation is that most of these priests (in my experiance) don’t know who exactly is that they are (or who they are supposed to be) and that is a Catholic priest and not “presiders” of liturgy that insist that the congregation doesn’t assist at a priest’s Mass, but offer the Mass with him as well — thus the Sacrificial, ordained priesthood is reduced to simply a “presider of the assembly.”

I reside in the RC Diocese of Albany, where liturgical abuse is the norm. Four years ago, after witnessing a EMHC drop a consecrated host on the Sanctuary floor, pick it up and redeposit it in her Pyrex glass communion bowl, I knelt before the Tabernacle and asked our Lord to guide me to a holy priest, a reverent liturgy and a community where my God-given abilities were needed. Each Sunday I would attend Mass at a different RC parish. At the suggestion of a friend in CA, I attended Mass at a local Maronite Church. Though initially disoriented by the differences, I was moved to tears of joy witnessing the priest bow profoundly to the Tabernacle - 3 times - while chanting the Qadeeshat. I have been there ever since.

I would encourage anyone who lives near a Maronite Church to visit it. To hear the words chant the Words of Institution in Aramaic - the language of our Lord - is as close as one will come to being at the Last Supper.

We have been attending (not yet joined) a parish near Tampa–Diocese of St Pete. It is beautiful, I love the priests, but it seems a bit less traditional than I’m accustomed to. (from PA) Can you clarify what you mean by ‘Protestant Catholic Churches?’ I just was wondering if you have experienced some of the things we have. We already stopped going to a parish after we initially moved, because it was way out there…I was like…is this a Catholic Church?😦 But, we really like this new one, albeit…slightly non tradtional. I am not sure if there are any traditional parishes like ones I grew up with (up north) down in the south.🤷
