Probably I would have brought up the inability of finding the shoes with my supervisor on the third day and I would have asked for suggestions. For sure I would have not argued about the content of the employee handbook. I came from a different country too and I followed the rule (because I came from a different culture) stating that I was supposed to listen, follow directions and ask for clarifications. Three decades later I still use the same rule because I realized that it is not about culture but about relations between dependents and supervisors. Just think of it as if you were in the army and you are going to be fine in most of the cases. Formally apologizing for errors either real or perceived is a good policy too.
I should have brought that up that I was having a hard time finding the right size. But I did not really argued with him about the handbook. I merely pointed out to him that the handbook says that athletic shoes are PERMITTED. First I asked him if there were recent accidents in the company ( because if he answered yes I would just shut up and tell him that I just wanted to know) he said no, and then asked me why. Since he said no I pointed out the what is in the handbook. He laughed at me and told me that it was a recent change. So I politely asked him if I can read the memorandum, he laughed again and changed the subject, and he was NICE to me the rest of the day, first in the 5 days I’ve been there!

I think he is actually the one who owes me an apology, not that I am looking for it. I think being nice for me that day is his apology!

It’s not “bullying” when a company allows its middle management to use their judgement and initiative and set reasonable working rules for the local environment without having to hire lawyers to review policy documents and craft handbook language and worry about how such things can be used against the company. It IS a characteristic of a free and healthy society when people are given the opportunity to lead and to reward productive workers and punish those who drag down the productivity of the workplace. Don’t be one of the latter.
I think it is bullying if you only apply that judgement to a certain individual only; those kind judgment should be in general, applicable to all concerned. When you see other branches utilizing athletic shoes as per the handbook, I don’t see the need to punish an individual for what the company PERMITS. Discipline him/her if tit calls for and discipline those who are in the same boat. I see his action as an abuse of authority.

After a few days on the job you are already planning to go to the district manager telling him how to improve things and planning to do that while going behind your supervisor’s back? That sounds like a very arrogant and self destructive move. There is a big difference between being diplomatic and being manipulative, please be very careful.
No no not right away. When and if I become a regular and when he asked me how things went. It is not like I am back stabbing my supervisor. I am not arrogant that I will just go him and lay out what I have in mind. He asked me on my third day on how things are, and I just said that everything is fine ( I did not tell about how my supervisor is treating me).

So I know that when I become a regular that is of course with the recommendation of the supervisor. But IF the district manager is a wise manager, he will ask also my co-workers also about my performance not just the supervisor.

I think the district manager likes me, the way he talked to me and the way he interviewed me. I guess, but I could be wrong that what ticks the supervisor off when he saw how the district manager treated me. And the way the district manager talked with me on my third day. But that is just speculation of may part. I am also guessing that the district manager talked to him about the foot wear policy, that is why the supervisor was nice to me.

Seems to me a difference between the proper attitude of an employee vs. the proper attitude of a slave.

What a frivalous thing to argue over.

There are millions of unemployed people in America who would love to put with your supervisor, especially if it is only over something like this!!!. Maybe you should quit and give them a chance.
