I talked to my mom recently, who is Church of Christ, about my conversion to Catholicism, and needless to say she is not happy about it. I need help with trying to tell her about the way the early church was. When I talked to her about Clement of Rome, Polycarp, and Ignatious, among others, she said that those writings could not be trusted because they were written by man and the early church was corrupt. She claims that there were only tiny pockets of the “true” church and that they were driven underground, she also seems to believe that this church was a non-liturgical, bible-based, 45 minute long sermon church. I hve given her many many examples and explained that Jesus didn’t leave the bible, he left the church, but she refuses to listen to me. Should I just give up, or should I still try to talk to her about why I am doing this? It really frustrates me and I’m having a rough time with this. Also, please give examples that I could use to refute the things she says. She also says that there is no need for the Old Testimate, and that we do not need it because Jesus did away with it, can someone place explain this to me??

P.S sorry about the length!

At the end of the day we can only preach the Gospel, the Holy Spirit does the converting. The most you can expect is for her to accept the fact that you are now Catholic. If she does not, then your job is to show her how you live the Gospel in your life, and not just by “talking” about it.

Some suggestions:

Give her a copy of the little book - Where We Got the Bible, Our Debt to the Catholic Church - available from Catholic Answers and Amazon.

It’s available on line here: catholicapologetics.info/apologetics/protestantism/wbible.htm

You should read it first, so you’ll know all the facts and can discuss it with her.

Recommend it to your RCIA classmates as well.

Best book recommendation: Born Fundamentalist, Born Again Catholic by David Currie. Again, you should read it. It will give you a lot of helpful information.

Here is a blog for Church of Christ members who became Catholic that may give you some ideas:

P.S. I forgot about this book, which I own. I was reminded of it on the CoC blog (link above).

The first is by a preacher who left the CoC and became Catholic. This book is a great introduction to the differences between the two groups, and I believe it to be written with respect for both traditions:

Another book I would recommend is the “Fathers Know Best” by Jimmy Akin, and one by Scott Hahn, title “Sign of Life”-about the biblical basis of catholic beliefs and “Reasons to Believe” about how to explain the Catholic faith.

Hope this helps.
