deadly is not standing up and doing anything about it. marijuana has countless contribution to gluttony and sloth. both deadly sins that tear us away from God and the people around us. there is no middle, no less bad, least evil, or slightly okay or better. only ONE GOOD. As Catholics we stand as whole in order to protect the whole. not let some thing slip by because it is not as important or least harmful. that in itself is sloth and damaging to our simple being.

Everyone seems disinterested and lazy to this issue simply because it doesn’t apply to them or they think it’s “no big deal”. that’s what is upsetting the most. at least there are people to oppose the other crude that is going on, but with this? like no body cares about Truth anymore simply because it’s not that big of a deal. sorry pal, but the even one foul is wrong and even one personal addiction could cause harm to your own peace. kind of like the rich merchant of whom Jesus asked to give up his possessions. even one little thing can explode into something that takes you off the road.

in the end it’s all gluttony and that’s addiction. in the end it still needs to be opposed.
I’m with you on reviving Puritanism!

Close down the La-Z-Boy merchants of sloth!

Shut down the arterial-clogging restauranteurs of gluttony!

I already pretty much am. However there is a patience in battle whether it is war or fighting to control and develop your spirit away from sin. So the first stand would be against marijuana and it’s use. That would be if I can not find one however. I don’t want to as I don’t like creating multiple groups/organizations to do one thing as it will compete against one another for members, resources, and eventually ideas.
A noble crusade! Start with crusading against the millions of people in the world who use marijuana for spiritual reasons, and then slowly work toward crusading against those enamored with judgmentalism and calumny.

.

then i guess you never went to high school? that’s all I heard at high school, that’s all I heard growing up. before, during, after any party…“Im going to get baked”, “I was so baked”. it is that feeling of high that makes marijuana what it is, if it wasn’t then who would use it? no one ! after all it is that ‘high’ that people refer to when they try and say, “let’s relax”
Are you basing your assumptions on young people who are using pot? Because if that is the case then I agree with you. Young people should not smoke pot or drink alcohol, and the ones who do normally do experiment at a young age talk of getting “baked”, or if trying alcohol want to get “drunk”. I am referring to responsible adults. The same ones who drink responsibly. Same ones can moderate marijuana. You are talking about your past experiences with young kids who have no business drinking or smoking pot.
How is it degrading, I’m telling you fact. If someone is telling you that the best means to nirvana is weed and you should bake your self before meditating…is that not against Catholic teachings? it is the exact opposite and to be told to participate is to put your Catholic upbringing to the side. that’s what I get out of it as I see no possible way for anyone to partake in another religious activity and remain open to Christ. I think that’s why the occult, paganism, and other
I have been all over the world and have only known a few people who even consider pot as a religious sacrament. Of all the people I have known in the U.S who smoke the same is true. I personally know scores of responsible adults who partake in the use of marijuana from time to time and none of them are abusing it. I also know other adults who do abuse it, but then again, I know even more who abuse alcohol. It is all about moderation and education.

To say that marijuana is automatically some sort of religious activity is not true and is base on your limited experience with people and understandings of others religions.

It seems that our society has gone to the (hell) dogs. One curse in particular is marijuana. In what I have heard; countries that have legalized the narcotic has serious corruption in every day life. Sloth, gluttony, and even lust appear to explode from it as the morals to the local people fall horribly.
For your entire post, you really should cite your sources.

In any event, you heard incorrectly and your opinion is grounded on a weak foundation.

Marijuana is illegal in America. America is the fattest wester nation, has a very succesful adult film ( porn) industry and the highest teen pregnancy rate in the western world. ( So, sloth, gluttony and lust have already exploded in America…without legalizing marijuana)

Are there any websites that can help spread knowledge and means about the stupidity to marijuana? Articles and/or books that do the same? Movies/documentaries perhaps that expose marijuana for what it is?
Research yourself and get back to us!
We need to tackle this problem in the U.S. before it spreads creating a numbing in our society and destroys our ability to think for ourselves.
America has been waging a solid war against drugs for decades and America has soundly lost said war.

Ok, ::cracks knuckles:: Where do I start?

Before you start a war against Marijuana perhaps I should give you the education you asked for.

First off, Yes, Marijuana is quickly becoming more acceptable in our society. I’m not going to go on about the racist and greedy reasons that went behind making it illegal because you obviously won’t care about that. You are talking about it in terms of sin. And yes, it is much safer than alcohol and tobacco, which when it is legalized, might make people choose it instead of the other two, which would be good for everyone. You obviously can’t debate how people are affected or feel because you’ve never done it so you have no grounds or right to debate anyone who has about that subject. IE: Me. WHEN it is legalized it will be amazing for the whole country. People who have conditions that this herb helps and have been ill-treated with medicines that don’t work will have a much better quality of life. The thousands of products, textiles, food, medicines it can make will boost the countries economy to unimaginable numbers. Here’s a little fact for you:
Until 1883, from 75-90% of all paper in the world was made with cannabis hemp fiber including that for books, Bibles, maps, paper money, stocks and bonds, newspapers, etc. The Gutenberg Bible (in the 15th Century); Pantagruel and the Herb pantagruelion, Rabelais (16th Century); King James Bible (17th Century); the works of Fitz Hugh Ludlow, Mark Twain, Victor Hugo, Alexander Dumas; Lewis Carroll’s “Alice in Wonderland” (19th Century); and just about everything else was printed on hemp paper.
And even something from the Bible:
"God makes the Earth yield healing herbs, which the prudent man should not neglect. "Sirach: 38:4 (Catholic Bible).
Also 1 acre of hemp equals 4.1 acres of trees when it comes to making paper and it, obviously, grows much much quicker. I am a Christian. I love God. Marijuana makes me feel at peace with myself. I love intelligent conversation and when I smoke Cannibis, it just seems to make it more inventive. Don’t give into the racist propaganda of the 40s. Think for yourself.

da_nolo,

Here is the scenario that has been happening in regard to pot and the later use of drugs.
  1. Society(normally ones who have never tried it) automatically preach the horrors of marijuana and how it will be so devastating with just one experience. They preach up and down about what a terrible thing marijuana is. The same people even say the same thing about drinking.
  2. A young person tries pot. They realize that it isn’t this big bad thing that people like you in society have made it out to be.
  3. This gets the young person thinking. This gets them thinking that they have obviously been lied to about marijuana.
  4. Once a person realizes that marijuana is not such a big terror, they may or may not assume that the other harder drugs may be the same way. This is the real problem at hand. The young person feels cheated and lied to about marijuana. This is when they could possibly fall into the trap of doing the other drugs.
Try doing a little research on all the deaths related to marijuana overdoses. Wait, I will save you some time. There are none.

I am not condoning the use of marijuana by any means. Im not of the camp that thinks everyone needs to try certain elements. It isn’t for everyone. Neither is drinking. Neither is caffeine. And, I don’t believe that the Bible is hinting that we are to partake in any type of plant just because it is available. I do not believe that is what was cited earlier by another poster because there are many dangerous plants out their that will kill you. Marijuana isn’t one of them though.

Peace, T 🙂

T, good post.

I can say I have been smoking for 5 years and never have any urge to get into others. It’s really all up to the person. Another thing is most of the cancer and brain damage claims have been found to be myths by real scientists doing actual studies.

I think I really said all I had to say in the last post, tho.

Sloth, gluttony, and even lust appear to explode from it as the morals to the local people fall horribly. It is horribly addictive as those who are or unwilling to notice it is claim that there are no physical/chemical addiction…actually trying to refrain from the truth that it does not need to be like nicotine in order to being addictive. Use of such drug creates an natural unbalance within the brain creating a situation when a person is no longer in control of their own body and mind = In my opinion; weakening their spirit. Now though this is absolutely obvious to me and I would think common sense, unfortunately it is not.

I don’t know what you have been smoking but you should stop it is making you say funny things. Marijuana is NOT addictive. I started smoking it when I was 22 and I routinly go months without it or even thinking about it as do millions of others who have smoked it and never became addicted. It has many positive effects like being a good pain killer for people with aids, cancer, helps with glacoma and is a good social lubracant (like alcohol) without the out of control effects one gets from drinking. One does not lose control when high one is in control of their faculties to the point one can smoke up and do their job or school work and other things. If you are a christian you can not condem mariujana becuse it is something created by God and it is good (gen 1) Jesus himself indulged in drinking (a mind altering narcotic) and if alive today He would smoke up just as he drank. and there is nothing in scripture that contradicts this. scripture warns against “drunkeness” which is abuse but nothing against use. anything can become addictive if allowed. sex, money, power, t.v., even self rightousness and holier than thou attitudes. but they can also be used without the addictive aspects. For instance about three years ago I did a couple of lines of cocain now if the propaganda is to be belived I should be an out of control drug addict yet I have not done it since or even had a desire to do it again. Further from an eucamenical point of view there are spiritual uses for it as well (just as catholics use wine in communion) such as rastafarians. vatican 2 decalred that all faiths (all humans/creation) have degrees of communion with the body of christ and any truth find its perfection in the catholic faith. so the use of pot or peyote or what have you finds its perfection in the eucharist but just becuse it lacks the perfection of the eucharist does not mean that it does not share in that perfection. a peyote healing ceremony finds its perfection in the anointing of the sick and eucharist but just becuse it is not fully perfect does not change the fact that those who have gone through it find healing in it. Further the church uses mind altering narcotics (not just wine) in the incence it burns. Incence produces a relaxing state of mind not all that different from pot. Further the human body is just one big chemical factory and everything put into it changes the way we precive reality so that everything is a mind altering narcotic the food we eat changes the way we think i.e. eating an apple when tired wakes us up. even the air we breath changes the way we think in fact there are breathing exersises that can produce vision/locutions/mystical experiences not all that different from a mushroom trip. Now some will argue that narcotics are bad becuse of the lack of reason they produce and the lack of reason is a sin. I find this argument flawed. Does someone who is insane without reason? No they just have a different way of looking at the world. What about someone with autism (like dustin hoffmans character in rain man) who can not function in the world but is a prodigy at a certain thing (like math) lack reason? I would say no. or what about someone who is born disabled and has no more intellegence than a dog lack reason? if they do they are in a state of sin and are unable to rectify themselves through repentance. So you will argue that is not the same thing as the lack of reason brought on by the use of narcotics. Why? the use of mushrooms puts one in the same state of mind as a schizophrenic for a short time. if it is not a sin to be schizophrenic why is it a sin to think like one? the moral law must be universal and apply to everyone if it does not than it is not a law just a suggestion.

Far out JPK1313:eek:

I am sorry to say that your above post does not state Catholic Teachings-- your post reflects a very disorded way of thinking.I seriously think that you ought to stay away from dope. The question I ask you is ----what is so horrible either in your past or even present life that you need to use drugs at all?

Perhaps a priest or seeking drug abuse therapy clinic would be helpful for you.I will not even attempt to show where you are incorrect in your posting,as I would be only “talking” to the drugs and not to you.

You are one person that needs prayers, may St.Maximilian Kolbe help you to stop using drugs period.God Bless.

Excellent post. However, I don’t agree that one must have previously smoked weed in order to discuss how a user may feel or how a user may be affected.

For example, a person doesn’t need to smoke crack cocaine in order to have an intelligent discussion on how the drug makes a person feel and how crack cocaine may affect their life.

There are other ways in which a person can obtain accurate, reliable and factual information on drug effects, symptoms and risks…without having to have used the drug.

I agree 100% and was meaning to say the same thing. Glad you pointed that out.

Obviously I am pro-legalization or at least pro-decriminalization, but I don’t agree that marijuana is not addictive. Marijuana can be addictive for some people and cause a person to rely on it on a daily basis. Psychological addiction is still addiction. Im one of those people who can’t smoke marijuana. I become psychologically addicted to it and soon need to rely on it on a daily basis. Even if it is just a once a day type of use. I can’t drink alcohol either.

Ok, let me rephrase. Sure, you can tell me I’ll have short term memory loss, paranoia, food cravings aka munchies, and ill drive my car slow (which I tested last night and two cops passed me and didn’t know I was high so that blows that out of the water) among other symptoms while I’m under the influence. But, and this is coming from someone who was against it until I actually tried it and realized the government was lieing, you can’t really know what it feels like or how someone is going to react because it effects everyone differently. I mean if a doctor said…“well he feels high” well do you understand what high feels like? It’s a physical feeling almost like your skin is charged with energy, like your about to start floating but you never do. I see that you are trying to understand it and I respect that. But even with all the words you read you can’t say exactly what it does without trying it.

Edit: I’m sorry in my rambling I forgot to address the addiction, my apologies.

Yes, Marijuana may be psychologically addicting to some people. But, really, anything can be psychologically addicting. For instance, people who are overweight are addicted to food. Coffee, soda, even an activity like stealing (for some people) can be addictive. So I feel whenever people bring that up its just like “Ehh…what isn’t?”

I don’t smoke weed / haven’t smoked weed and am not going to smoke weed. I feel that marijuana should be decriminalized, if not outright legalized.

As far as the opinion that weed is not addictive…

I’ve worked with enough youths anecdotally to know that without a doubt, that marijuana can be addictive, marijuana can impede young lives and marijuana can send youths spiraling in directions in which they never intended to go.

You claim to be a “christian”–what are you thinking–driving a car whilst “high”–who are you kidding–risking other peoples lives is a sin–a hugh amount of young people die in road accidents with marijuana in their system—you are bad news

and ill drive my car slow (which I tested last night and two cops passed me and didn’t know I was high so that blows that out of the water) among other symptoms while I’m under the influence.
You broke the law and endangered every other person using the road last night. You sound like your proud of the fact that a couple of cops couldn’t detect that you were impaired by drugs while operating a motor vehicle.

We’re supposed to be impressed that you deliberately impaired your cognitive functioning and then operated a motor vehicle on a public road?

That is what I call a very, very selfish act.

I know very well what the affects of marijuana feel, and while I won’t equate the impairment with being buzzed/drunk on alcohol, I still don’t agree with driving on it. If you’re chillin just stay in one place bro.

I agree, what he did isn’t a bright idea. However, to a huge amount of young people die in road accidents with mairjuana, may or may not depending on what the criteria of huge is. It certainly isn’t near alchol. Even though I won’t equate it to alcohol it still it does affect driving preformance:
WebMD Health NewsDec. 1, 2005 - People who drive after using marijuana are nearly twice as likely to be involved in a fatal car crash.
French researchers studied all drivers involved in fatal car crashes over a two-year period and found 7% tested positive for marijuana, including nearly 3% who tested positive for a combination of marijuana and alcohol.
Although marijuana’s share of fatal crashes is much lower than those attributed to alcohol, researchers say the results show that marijuana use, even in low doses, significantly increases the risk of fatal car accidents.
More Pot, More Deaths
In the study, published in the medical journal BMJ, researchers reviewed information on 10,748 drivers who were involved in fatal car crashes and took required tests for drugs and alcohol.
Twice as many drivers involved in fatal car accidents tested positive for marijuana compared with a group of other drivers.
Researchers say about 2.5% of the fatal crashes were attributable to marijuana compared with nearly 29% attributable to alcohol.
The study also showed that drivers who tested positive for marijuana were more than three times as likely to be responsible for the fatal car crash. Researchers say the likelihood of being at fault increased as the blood concentration of marijuana increased.

The fiery crash resulted in 5 people dead – all teenagers; and 11 others injured,
9 of which were teenagers. The two gentlemen in the truck were also severely
injured. The driver of the truck still has the scars of the fateful night when his arm
was severed and re-attached, but is still missing sensation. The passenger had
numerous surgeries and eventually had to have his leg amputated as a result of
his injuries.

When the car that was hit by the truck in the first collision caught fire, some of the
people in that car were trapped. Their bodies were burnt beyond recognition.
Their families could not identify them.

All the teenagers involved that night were good friends. The driver of the first
vehicle that caused the collision survived and was convicted of impaired driving
causing death and served jail time. He has to live with the guilt that he killed 5 of
his close friends and caused serious injury to so many others.

None of these young people thought smoking weed and driving could be
dangerous and it was proven in court that impairment by marijuana was a key
factor.

👍

An excellent point–one does not need to be in a bad car crash to observe the consequences of it.In one sense a drug user is really a potential wreck!

Im pretty sure that you’re not that well informed on the seriousness people are putting behind the decriminalization and/or legalization due to statements like that. If you’re ever pulled over while high on marijuana it is my hopes that you lose your license and pay all of the fines that normally proceed a DUI case. Driving high is just as serious and dangerous as drinking while drunk. Thanks a lot!!

And thanks for allowing the stereotypes of pot heads to be a reality during this thread.
