NOTE: There is NOT an English version approved for France. So an English speaker in France should be free to use whichever version he wishes to use.

Laudate? I would rather have some of the breviaries listed above as well, but this most famous Catholic App has the LOTH and is free.
 
  1. The OP already expressed his preference for a book.
  2. Laudate does not use official translations, impacting the ability to participate, whether in a community praying the Hours or in union with the Catholic Church as a liturgical prayer.

FYI - the Laudate app does use official translations of the LOTH, but it is the British version, not the “North American” version.

There are currently three English versions of the LOTH:
  • The British Version
  • The American Version
  • The African Version (which is new and kind of a best of both worlds hybrid of the American & British versions)

Validity refers to whether or not a sacrament took place. Only sacraments can be valid or invalid.

The matter of whether a translation of the breviary, or any other liturgical book for that matter, is approved in a given territory has mainly to do with whether the book is approved for public usage. A cleric or religious bound to the office satisfies his obligation to pray it with any approved book.

So if a priest prefers the U.K edition of the LOTH, but lives in the U.S., he can still use it to fulfill his obligation?
 
Yes. He just can’t use it in public liturgical celebrations in the church.

I was going to suggest this. This used to be a devotion for many lay people AND priests before the Second Vatican Council and is still beautiful today. It can be prayed in either Latin or the vernacular. 😊
 
Yes, that’s right. But I was comparing it to the contemporary traditional full Roman Office of the time. That only has an official Latin version. 😉
 
Thank you father for your response. On these forums, I have had people tell me otherwise, that a priest, or someone with an obligation to recite the office, must use their country’s breviary in private recitation. If they don’t, they fail to fulfill their obligation and their prayer isn’t ‘liturgical.’
