I have this friend who has been learning a lot about the 7th Day Aventist beliefs and has been questioning me on my Catholic beliefs. We’ve mainly been discussing the 3rd Commandemen. He doesn’t understand how we are honoring Sabbath if we’re worshipping on Sunday instead of Saturday. Can anyone help me explain this Commandment so I can help my friend?

In the Early Church, the first Christians used to attend the Liturgy of the Word on Saturdays at the Synagogue, but on Sundays, because of the fact that Jesus had risen from the dead on a Sunday, they made it a point to gather together for the Liturgy of the Eucharist.

As time went on, more and more Christians were no longer Jewish, so they no longer gathered at the Synagogue on Saturdays to hear the Scriptures read out - instead, they had the Liturgy of the Word just before the Liturgy of the Eucharist on Sundays. By the lifetime of St. Justin Martyr, who described the Sunday Mass in detail in 150 AD, it was already the custom of Christians to honour Sunday as the new Sabbath of the Lord. He does not describe it as a recent change, so we can safely assume that Sunday Mass was celebrated at least throughout his lifetime, if not longer.

It was Jesus who told the early Church leaders, "whatever you bind on earth is bound in Heaven (Matthew 18:18) and it was these same Church leaders who moved the celebration of the Sabbath from Saturday to Sunday, thus binding us to Sunday worship on earth, with the sure promise that God will honour it in Heaven.

The first thing you need to Understand is that the Adventists loathe Catholicism and have developed a repertoire that is designed solely to attack Catholicism. Pretty much anything you tell them that conflicts with their view has a rebuttal planned and ready that they will use against you. Jehovah’s Witnesses follow basically the same program with a few variations, understandable since they both sprang forth from the same original group… The Sunday angle is usually the first step in a long well planned attack on the Faith designed solely to put doubt and questions in your mind. Unless you are pretty well grounded in theology, I wouldn’t engage in a debate with him. His attack, and believe me, it is an attack, even if he is personally unaware of it, is well planned and your responses anticipated.

Why not turn the tables on him and ask him to explain the numerous flaws in their belief system, particularly the revelations about the end of the world that their religion springs from. I have debated these misguided folks on numerous occasions and I have found that angle sets them back on their heels and puts you in a superior position.

Don’t think for one second that these people are looking for any type of reconciliation with the Mother Church. We are a lot more interested in that then they are. Trust me.

Good luck trying to explain that one! I had a Adventist try to convert me not to long ago and it did not go well! She stopped talking to me when I started to question her about the Sabbath and their “prophet”, Ellen G. White. She went on the defense. For what? If your Church is the only “true” church, then why become defensive over a seemly innocent question? What I took from her, is that Adventists are anti-Catholic big time! If your friend is anything like this woman, than he will probably go on the defense if you question him about his faith.

To answer your question, I’m not knowledgeable about the Sabbath and why we have church on Sunday as I’m learning more myself. But it seems like PPs gave you some good info. 🙂
