We are seriously considering going Eastern Catholic. Live near Melkite and Ruthenian parishes.

Two things, please help

I’d like to purchase a prayer book and a Divine Liturgy book. I found a DL book for clergy, is that the same as the DL book for parishoners.

Also, would a prayer book help me understand/learn matins, vespers, etc? We’d also love to go to matins first.

(I know the internet is good, but I’m much better with an actual book in my hands!)

In Christ,

For the Melkites Byzantine Daily Worship while not cheap is a treasure of prayer, the Hours, and Liturgy in the Melkite tradition. Icon and Book Service used to carry this for about $55 or so.

BDW has texts for Matins (Orthros). The parish may also have a booklet you can borrow or buy to become familiar with the service.

An excellent discussion of services can be found at the St. Elias website saintelias.com/ca/services/index.php

They also have a great YouTube video site as well youtube.com/profile_videos?user=tsyhan

You might be interested in some of the most ancient prayers of the Church of the East (now the modern Chaldean Catholics/ ACotE).

here is a link a thread I posted recently of a new book published that is basically the first translation into english (that I know of) of the Chaldean “liturgy of the hours”.

WE ARE SERIOUSLY CONSIDERING GOING EASTERN CATHOLIC----- LIVE NEAR MELKITE AND RUTHENIAN PARISHES.

It was mentioned that you are in need of a prayer book. Ruthenian wise— Byzantine Book of Prayer(easy to carry), March 25, 1995 and purchased from Byzantine Seminary Press, for under $20.00. Granted some of words of the present Divine Liturgy have changed but contains other services, too. If you want to purchase the new—The Divine Liturgies of our Holy Fathers John Chrysostom and Basil the Great-- 2006 and the 7 CD set of each liturgy of the whole year(as contained in the new book), go to the same site as within this message.

I am sure each Eastern Catholic Church will agree with me this quote----" Experience the Eastern Catholic Church as the best kept secret of the Catholic Church".
