I’m trying to find a scripture verse, or at least a place in the bible that talks about the different types of sins. That some sins are worse than others. I’m having a discussion with a Baptist friend of mine and he is having a hard time understand this. Can anyone help me out?

I don’t think you need the Bible to tell you that making fun of someone isn’t as bad as killing them.

There are sins that lead to death and some that do not.

1 John 5:

16 If anyone sees his brother commit a sin that does not lead to death, he should pray and God will give him life. I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death. I am not saying that he should pray about that.

17 All wrongdoing is sin, and there is sin that does not lead to death.

Thanks for that 06convert,

But does that sin it speaks of in reference to the one unforgivable sin?

31 Therefore I say to you: Every sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven men, but the blasphemy of the Spirit shall not be forgiven. 32 And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but he that shall speak against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him neither in this world, nor in the world to come. (Matt 12)
Jesus offers these words in the presence of the Pharisees, who had just attributed Christ’s power to exorcise demons to Satan himself.

Jesus’ point is that blaspheming is, essentially, saying that God is something He is not. In this case, Jesus is referring to the Pharisees who are trying to say that the authentic work of the Holy Spirit is itself demonic.

In effect, though, the Pharisees were saying more: their very practice of a works-based righteousness was, in effect, to say that they did not need God or his forgiveness–for they had already won their righteousness. Thus, for them, the works of the Holy Spirit and the works of Satan were indeed indistinguishable–and this is exactly what Jesus warns them about in verses 36-37:
36 But I say unto you, that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall render an account for it in the day of judgment. 37 For by your words you shall be justified, and by your words you shall be condemned.
Jesus is NOT saying that we could say some kind of word that God does not have the ability or will to forgive; rather, God’s forgiveness is ALREADY a reality (as evidenced by Jesus’ healing of the blind/dumb man w/ the demon). However, some folks (like the Pharisees) do not believe in that forgiveness–to the point of attributing it to a demonically untrustworthy source.

Simply put, then, if we so regard the Grace of God, how CAN he forgive us, we who deny that forgiveness as necessary or efficacious in the first place?

Hope this helps!

There is no unforgivable sin for us. As long as we are alive we can be absolved from all sin.

+Jesus Himself dealt with the introduction of the importance of the spiritual concept and holy reality of “greater” and “lesser” sin in the following passage of Sacred :bible1: Scripture . . .

The Holy :bible1: Bible
Matthew 22:36-40
36 Master, which is the greatest commandment in the law? 37 Jesus said to him: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, and with thy whole mind. 38 This is the greatest and the first commandment. 39 And the second is like to this: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 40 On these two commandments dependeth the whole law and the prophets.

See John 9:11
11* Jesus answered him, “You would have no power over me unless it had been given you from above; therefore he who delivered me to you has the greater sin.”

Those are not sins, those are the primary performances of the law given through Moses.

Do you think that the Rabbi did not know these?

Read Genesis 3, the story of the fall. Eve committed a venial sin: she was deceived and did not have full knowledge of the gravity of her sin. Adam committed Mortal sin: he was instructed by God Himself and thus we know Adam had complete and utter full knowledge of the gravity of his sin as well as full consent (he was not deceived). he knew and did it anyway. Thus it is that Paul tells us that “Wherefore as by one man sin entered into this world, and by sin death; and so death passed upon all men, in whom all have sinned.” Roman 5:12.

Hope this helps…

Serious or deadly, mortal(as opposed to not serious) - Ps 19:13: Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me! Then I shall be blameless, and innocent of great transgression

John 19:11: Jesus answered him, “You would have no power over me unless it had been given you from above; therefore he who delivered me to you has the greater sin.”

1 Jn 5:16: If any one sees his brother committing what is not a mortal sin, he will ask, and God will give him life for those whose sin is not mortal. There is sin which is mortal; I do not say that one is to pray for that. 17: All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin which is not mortal.

There is a difference in OT sacrife for inadvertent sin, verses intentional sin. -

Ez - 45:20 You shall repeat this on the first day of the seventh month for those who have sinned through inadvertence or ignorance; thus you shall make atonement for the temple.

Num 15:24 then if it was done unintentionally without the knowledge of the congregation, the whole congregation shall offer one young bull for a burnt-offering, a pleasing odour to the LORD, together with its grain-offering and its drink-offering, according to the ordinance, and one male goat for a sin-offering.25 The priest shall make atonement for all the congregation of the Israelites, and they shall be forgiven; it was unintentional, and they have brought their offering, an offering by fire to the LORD, and their sin-offering before the LORD, for their error. 26 All the congregation of the Israelites shall be forgiven, as well as the aliens residing among them, because the whole people was involved in the error.27 An individual who sins unintentionally shall present a female goat a year old for a sin-offering. 28 And the priest shall make atonement before the LORD for the one who commits an error, when it is unintentional, to make atonement for the person, who then shall be forgiven. 29 For both the native among the Israelites and the alien residing among them you shall have the same law for anyone who acts in error. 30 But whoever acts high-handedly, whether a native or an alien, affronts the LORD, and shall be cut off from among the people. 31 Because of having despised the word of the LORD and broken his commandment, such a person shall be utterly cut off and bear the guilt.
