I am discerning my vocation to religious life many years ago and now one of the religious community that interest in me is the community of st.john here in my country the Philippines but sad to say due to lack of financial help i don’t have any chance to attend any of those invitation for vocation discernment process or vocation experience because of financial needs for transportation and other little thing before coming to the community.I am seeking generous help or someone who can help me with this matter.I want to become a religious and with your generous help i can fulfill my dream to enter the formation house.Pray for me as i for you always.Robinson

Have you spoken to the Brothers of St. John about your desire to attend their vocation programs and your lack of finances? They may be able to help you or they may know where you can go for help.

Thank you for the message Sr.Rose, the reason why i cannot easily go and attend the vocation retreat or discernment its because of financial needs specially transportation.I don’t think that they will provide it for me because they will surely provide my food and lodging while i am with them.Am sure they also needed fund. But i contacted the vocation director some time that soon if i get some help i will come and visit them and attend the vocation discernment program and their response is,okay we will pray for you and we will wait for you. That’s their answer so on my own need to find way to come to them.I am very excited and its been my dream to come over to them and stay with them and pray and discern my vocation.Do pray for me as i for you and all.Rob

Honestly,Sr.Rose.Most of the religious community do not shoulder the finances for transportation to an observer or to those who want to come for discernment or vocation experience.Even some of my friends they are lucky that they find someone who help them for the said transportation etc.But i will keep praying and trust the Divine Providence. With your prayers am sure God will send generous heart to assist me in my vocation discernment to come over to the community.Rob

Hi robinson! Wait a minute, are you the one who goes to the Minim monastery at Lumbang? You may try to approach first nearby religious orders, or if you really want to be with the Community of St. John, you may try writing a letter or calling them. It is very helpful.

Yes, if you have already spoken with their Vocation Director, and they know that you would like to come except for your financial difficulties, they would have told you if they had the means to help you. I’ll keep you in my prayers, Rob.
Thank you for your prayers.
God bless!

I’m sorry to hear your financial difficulties. I, too, would like to visit the monastery I am currently discerning with, but I have not acquired the means financially to do so. It’s a difficult choice to wait, but it’s the only choice I have until God puts the means in front of me. Other people have suggested that I ask people within my parish for assistance in acquiring the funds, but I do not feel comfortable approaching people asking for money. I hate it, actually. I would rather find work and earn money that way. Right now, I am selling some possessions of mine on eBay and Craigslist to try to afford the trip. I would suggest, if you are old enough (you must be 18 to sell on eBay), you might do the same. It takes work on your part, but if you are willing, you might be able to get closer to your goal of meeting the Brothers.

In the meantime, I will pray for you. This world is not easy for those who are called and don’t have money to discern. God will find a way, though. You must trust Him. God bless. 🙂

I don’t know if this will help but it’s a quote from the Kresta in the Afternoon radio show on Oct. 21. He interviewed Fr. Timothy Gallagher on discernment and St. Ignatius.

*Sometimes God just makes it so clear that the person can’t doubt it. And I think that’s the way God called me to the priesthood. It’s something in religious life, something I just loved and longed for for many years. Another way that God will reveal that is through a kind of consistent pattern of attraction in the times when our hearts feel closest to God, what Ignatius calls “spiritual consolation.” And if that pattern emerges over enough time, we begin to get a clear sense of where God is leading us. *Here is a link to the (“http://avemariaradio.net/archive2/2009/10/kpm_20091021_1.mp3”) of that episode. The whole interview starts around the 20:00 mark.
