… the moment I said that I read that Joseph Smith had a mental problem,( according to his own father first) they became quite irate and jumped up and said they would not tolerate me insulting their leader. I said, “You have been insulting mine all morning.” We totally disagree on who the TRUE leader is." They never came back and neither did any others. God Bless, Memaw
thanks, great idea.

Exactly! That is why I can’t wait to take my RCIA & Catechism classes and learn about the Scriptures so much more! I am excited! I can’t wait to debate on things I have questions about and I feel for my future teachers cuz they will find me challenging. 😃
You must also read what their doctrine says. Its hard to refute something when you are given proof that your prophets taught it.

True, and generally I don’t answer the door unless I know who it is. So there are as many times Mormon missionaries have come around and I answered the door, as there are times I didn’t answer the door.
Im dressing up like a missionary and knocking on your door with the b.o.m, the watchtower & koran in my hand and ask if you would like to convert for only $19.95.

Okay so I went to their Church service to clear things up. On their second part of Church they have a little sunday school type of deal. They talked about Heaven and what happens after. The said that after you die you go to spirit world (I guess a lot like Purgatory) to teach the word of Christ to those who did bad in their life. After that they said you go to Heaven to work even more and it’s broken up into 3 kingdoms, etc. I stood up and said “So wait you mean to tell me that after we die, we go to Heaven and work? That sounds a lot like hell to me. And why is it that there are 3 kingdoms? Once we get saved by Christ we are all equal.” I went on to go about joseph smith and all that, how he pretty much made the whole thing up. I then told them to just not buy into that garbage, I mean really it’s garbage made up by a con artist and to go the real path of Christ. I spoke my mind and left, I also let them know that the missionaries should not be coming my way anymore.
If you really did all this, I find it to be quite great, what an experience that must have been. Not many people have the guts to evangalize.

The error lies with the listener. It’s not your fault that others might focus on the tone or the rant rather than the message.

There are always multitudes of poor listeners. Offended by everything, not considering the nugget of truth in what they hear.

Many think evangalization is talking to the chior.

Truth is what it is, it’s not pretty. As a human, it can hurt quite a lot, starting with the first instruction: pick up your cross!

Who wants to do that? I’m comfy thanks.

Keep being strong.

evangelization is not about the evangelizer. I can’t think of anything that would be more repugnant or counterproductive than to invade a -]Mass/-] LDS service as a payback.

You should read his post, you missed the part that it was during class.

They also invited him, over and over again. They made that bed.

This guy, took the invitation and replied to the invite. Went into the lion’s den and stood his ground.

You don’t see the irony in telling someone they did something wrong by taking an invitation and raising his hand during Q&A, and telling someone off because you missed a football play, or one of 200 + laps for a car race?

not in the least.

Evangelization should draw people to the Catholic Church. Insulting their religion isn’t the best way to do that.

Thanks for all the replies but I need a good “get the hell away from me and don’t come back” type of thing if you know what I mean.
Ask for the name and number of their mission president so that you can call him and tell him that his missionaries are not respecting your wishes.

I’m sure the OP felt ‘insulted’ that this group didn’t listen to him, the first, the second, the third, the fourth, etc. time.

It goes back to -

They invited him, over and over again.

They got what they kept asking for, his attendance and his response to the information being shared.

Whether the OP had the “right” to do this is irrelevant. His diatribe was uncharitable and just reinforced the LDS people’s martyr complex. They probably felt like they (and their religion) were under attack. He built walls instead of tearing them down, and that is regrettable. Had he firmly testified his Catholic beliefs with a spirit of love that would have been one thing, but instead he put everyone on the defensive. I’ll be praying for the OP and the LDS people that had to sit through his ranting.

I love the nun. It scares me
I was taught by nuns, but I never ran across one of the ruler brandishing ones we read so much about. I’m sure they were there, just not in my neighborhood, and probably few and far between. Oops! Now here come the stories! :o

I find the way this has gone since the OP’s mention of what he did quite interesting.

Obviously, doing and saying things with respect and kindness can go a long way.

IF the situation the OP described in a short paragraph, was as it went over what I would guess was a couple hours or longer. (Which I would guess, he did not write here exactly as it went down)

Most of those listening blew him off as a nut.

Similarly, Jesus said 4 times what was to be done to gain eternal life in John 6, and he did not apologize or clarify.

Most of those listening blew him off as a nut.

I just find it interesting when you have folks that don’t understand that Truth has no emotion, nor does it care if you do. It will continue to exist as is, whether in math or in what we have hope in for after death.

Two wrongs make a right?

A funny missionary story from our family. We have friends whose last name is Mohrmann - pronounced like Mormon. Several years ago, we are in our front yard visiting with friends who were there to pick up our daughter. I was also getting ready to leave to do errands with my son. Someone looks down the street and says “the Mormons are coming” and we all scatter quickly and leave to avoid conversing with them. My son is with me and as we’re driving away - he asks “why didn’t you want to see the Mohrmann’s”? He was so puzzled as to why we were being mean to our friends.

That cracks me up!! :rotfl:

The essence of dealing with sects like Mormons, Jehovah Witnesses, The Way Ministries, The Internatonal Church of God (not of Jesus Christ!), Atheists etc. is to know what we believe as followers of Christ. We need to know Scripture!!! And when we do, Scripture speaks for itself! No argument, no animosity, no hostility. It makes things so simple! And even exciting! Who knows, you might just bring someone to faith in Christ in that process. You are prepared! The second point is that if we want to win a war, we need to have knowledge about the enemy we face. So find out who they are, what they believe, compare that with Holy Scriptures and you know where they are going wrong. Beyond all, keep in mind that THEY are lost, not you, THEY are misled, not you. And they are people just like you. So we need to love them, because they need love, just like you. Jesus said to love our enemies, not just our friends! Let’s love these people into the Kingdom of God and Jesus will be pleased!
But don’t forget to shake the dust from your feet if they do not welcome you. That is, don’t go overboard with the love business.

Give not that which is holy to dogs; neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest perhaps they trample them under their feet, and turning upon you, they tear you. Matthew 7:6

And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you; going forth from thence, shake off the dust from your feet for a testimony to them. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city. Mark 6:11

And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words: going forth out of that house or city shake off the dust from your feet. Amen I say to you, it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city. Matthew 10:13-15

And whosoever will not receive you, when ye go out of that city, shake off even the dust of your feet, for a testimony against them. Luke 9:5

But into whatsoever city you enter, and they receive you not, going forth into the streets thereof, say: 11Even the very dust of your city that cleaveth to us, we wipe off against you. Yet know this, that the kingdom of God is at hand. 12I say to you, it shall be more tolerable at that day for Sodom, than for that city. Luke 10:10

Ask them to pray the rosary with you. Tell them they can visit, but each meeting MUST begin with praying the rosary.
👍

But, pr5843, you do seem done with conversation. You could give them a brief:

“You are all nice people but your religion is not for me. I will stay Catholic forever because its the True Church established by Jesus Christ and He promised to never leave it - and I believe Him. So I don’t want to discuss your religion any more. Thank you anyway and God bless you.”

If they want to keep talking religion after that, You can say,

“You don’t seem to be hearing me. I have already said I am not interested, and this is not the first time I said it. I feel like you are stalking me.”

Which seems to the the truth so if you say it, that should make them back right off. People don’t like that word applied to them…

Oh, I see you already handled this. You did great! Much better than my idea.

Amen to that!

I don’t understand all the shaming the OP is getting here. OP did great. They must have misread. At least one here thought he had stood up in service. Must have never been to a Mormon Sunday. I have.

It goes on forever. General service includes boring hymns you never heard of (I suppose except at Christmas) from a hymnbook, hardly any Scripture if any [that boring Book of Mormon is NOT Scripture], a routine of nice young boys dressed in white shirts, ties, dress slacks, and dress shoes passing around bread and juice, There is community news like upcoming social and work events, soliciting volunteers and naming and thanking and congratulating people who volunteered. I think if I remember correctly that is also where persons find out in front of everyone (!) that God has volunteered them to assume some official position of leadership and service to some area of responsibility to the church. Then it concludes with the part where random people give random, various, often-rambling testimonies about what they’ve done or been thinking lately. And I can tell you it was hard to hold back and not tell my OWN testimony. I wanted to gag at the avid “…and I believe Joseph Smith is a prophet of God!” conclusions to their ramblings - I wanted to stand up and say, “That’s not what you are supposed to witnessing to!” But, not the time and place, however much I wanted.

But the long and boring Sunday School teaching after that - that is appropriate. Those missionaries should leave him alone now! And its useful for them to have learned a basic lesson that real teachers know, called: “Check for understanding.” If these missionaries had been open to and had taken the time to inquire and consider what our OP was thinking and feeling, they would not have invited him back to their church. So - their error. But “Natural consequences” is an excellent lesson.

Good for you, OP.
