Need Help , How to understand Jesus

Hello all

Am a 25 year old male from MI originally from the Middle East (IRAQ)
Me and my family are Chaldean , WE ARE NOT ARABIC BUT WE SPEAK IT SINCE WE LIVED THERE , I was born and raised catholic
in the past 2 months I had what i call a Spiritual Awakening , am trying live life according to laws set by our lord and our holy church !

In the next day or 2 I have to make the biggest decision in my life !
I work as a translator for the US Military in the US , I make about $35 to $45k a year ! doin it , I like my job.
I have an offer from the US Military to go to Iraq and make $180k in 1 year doing what am doing now ! I don’t have to go if i don’t want to ! but it would look great on my resume and , Me and my family can really use the extra cash , it will really improve our situation !
but its also risking your life for money !
I know people who have been doing it in Iraq for 5years and they love it , I know people who went there and got killed !
My question is , Risking your life for money is it a sin ?
I know in the book of Mathew Jesus said , What good can treasures of the world do a man if he loses his soul ? , I know he meant that in a different way also ,
I have been asking our good lord for advice on this , and I really cant understand the good lords answer !

any comments advice would be appreciated !

Coincidentally, the Church will focus next Sunday on the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan where the Spirit decended upon Him. Thereafter, He went into the desert and was … what? Tempted!

With your new Spiritual Awakening, I would expect an abundance of spiritual opposition to turn you back from the path you are now following. Weigh carefully the effects upon your family if something should happen to you, which would be devastating to them. Do you think they would rejoice that they were wealthy, if their loved one was gone? Have you discussed it with them? Assuming you arrive home safely, is it worth the emotional stress to them that is always present when a loved one is in a war zone?

Your responsibilities to them as Father and head of the family go much deeper than money.

I am reminded of St. Ignatius’ advise in his Spiritual Exercises. If you knew this was your last day on earth, how would you have wished you acted? And also, what would you advise your best friend if he came to you with the same question? 🙂

God bless you and help you as you wrestle with this difficult decision.

I have a great love for and feel an special spiritual burden to pray for the Iraqi Christians, especially the Chaldeans and Assyrians.

Stay sensitive to God’s leading in prayer and the Holy Mysteries, and He will guide you to the right decision.
 
I have a close friend who’s Caldean catholic from Iraq. He always boasts that Abraham came from there.
I would always put the interests of your family first. You have a very grave obligation to them and you must be alive to fulfil it. To put your life at an excessive risk is unacceptable in this particular situation. Don’t do it just for money. You have a good job. There are much more important things than money. That’s my opinion.

Most occupations involve some risk, and military service in a hot spot certainly does, but no, in and of itself enlisting is not a sin. I assume it is not just money but also a desire to serve the country? If it is all about the money, that may be a problem.

Consider these words of Jesus,…“where your heart is, so will your heart be.”

In other words, have your priorities right.

God
Family
Job.

Risking your life for a government, isn’t worth the money. You could easily find yourself abandoned over there, by the very government that is paying you. When we left Vietnman, we abandoned many Vietnamese people there, who had helped us.
They were never heard from again. The same could happen in Iraq, especially where this war is becoming more and more unpopular every day.

What will your wife and kids do, without you?

Leave such risk taking, even if its worthy, to young single men. There are plenty of them out there.

Your priority is being with your family.

If your decision to go to Irag is only about the money, then no, you shouldn’t go. You must place God first and foremost in your decision. If you feel that by going you will aid your family, your country, your fellow Chaldean brethren, and the Iraqies, you may want to consider it.

Pray for guidance. God will guide you in the right direction.
 
No I do not believe it is a sin to become a translator in Iraq.
It is a very important job. Ask your wife what she thinks and feels about it, then bring it all to God, the only one who can give you
your answer. Because you are married, I hope God decides to
tell you “No”, and spare your family this agony.

You don’t need to go to Iraq or earn a lot of money to be a hero.
You are married, and being a hero means being there for your
family.

for all the replies ! and support !

I am still praying and asking the lord ! for advice on this !
I am a single man , I am not married.
and to be honest , thats why I wanted to go to take this job.
It would help start a new home and , get married.

As far as doing the job just for the money.
I don’t think am doing it just for the money , I worked with our serving men and women from the lowest ranks , all the way up to the secretary of defense himself. Am not enlisted , am simply employed by the government as an employee.

As far as working in a war zone for money.
I really don’t think its right , but sometimes money can really help some 1 out.

To be honest , everytime , I go to see the pic’s of the fallen online , I pause for a few moments , and my heart really cries out to them , young kids , from the age of 18 up to grown men and women dying on foreign soil , It really brings tears to my eyes.
I always think maybe if , I was there , I would of done something to help. But again only god knows !

I would like to ask everyone here , In your prayers remember our serving men and women , and the innocent civilians who are being harmed in this war !
 
The important issue is: what are the motives of your heart? Is this a path that God has revealed to you so that you may serve Him and your neighbors more faithfully and fully?
