It sits in the refectory at the monastery at Monte Cassino. Wondering who did it, how it got there, etc. Just curious…

Could it conceivably be Annigoni? Here’s a snippet from the Wikipedia entry, in which three other painters are also named:

Interesting, seems to depict St. Benedict (?) A similar image of him holding a book is a statue at Montecassino

But the scene with a king is odd. Usually St. Benedict is depicted with a kneeling King Totila,

“Totila’s meeting with Benedict of Nursia at Monte Cassino is preserved in Pope Gregory I’s Dialogues (ii.14–15). It occurred either before or soon after the siege of Naples; the Benedictines’ traditional date is March 21, 543. It includes a telling of the abbot’s discernment of an aide of Totila’s, his sword-bearer Riggio, dressed in royal robes, as an impostor, and also his predictions for Totila, who knelt to him. This event was a favorite subject for Italian painters.”

When I cropped out everything in the photo except the painting, neither TinEye nor Google Images came up with any hits.

By zooming in on the painting it looks like the painter’s name, on the lower right hand corner, is “Simonetti”.

The problem is that there are several Italian painters with the same surname, and so far I haven’t found the one who painted this. I also did an image lookup on Google with no hits.

I may be back there in 2017 for the next Congress if there is one, as I’m on the organizing committee. If you’re patient I’ll try to remember to ask someone at the monastery 😛

Could the signature possibly be Stefanelli, rather than Simonetti? There was a Romano Stefanelli among Annigoni’s assistants (post #2 on this thread).

The first 5 letters are definitely SIMON… The last ones I’m less sure about but it looks like Simonetti.

In the meantime I’ve been looking at some of Stefanelli’s work on Google Images and in fact it doesn’t look at all like the painting in the OP. Sorry I wasted your time!

Bart

Could you check Giuseppe Simonelli?
I cannot see much detail with my cel phone.
