So, I have scrupulosity. After meeting with my spiritual director this past Saturday, I was told that I should stop going to confession so often. Every 3 weeks to a month is fine. Secondly, I was told that I should stop confessing doubtful sins. Doubts are a matter for resolution, not absolution. I should take my doubts about my consent or knowledge of the gravity as a sign that I did not fully consent or know the gravity.

So I said “Okay, I’ll go to mass tomorrow and I won’t confess all my scrupulous doubtful sins. I’ll put off confession until next week.”

But, I had been having a cold for a few days, and when I woke up Sunday morning I felt awful. During the mass it got worse and I almost got up and left. But I stayed for the whole thing and received communion.

Turns out, after going to the clinic, I have influenza!
Part of me worried that this influenza is a sign from God or a punishment for taking communion without confessing.

I told my spiritual director about my flu via email but they were just like “take a rest,” and didn’t seem concerned about the confession thing.

Any thoughts? Is this just the fever messing with my brain?

Fever, maybe. Scrupulosity, definitely. It’s not a sign. It’s not a punishment. Get some rest and recover from your flu. And don’t ask questions about matters of conscience online. It will only worsen your condition. Stick to talking to your spiritual director.
