At Confession today, I confessed to having racist thoughts. I don’t think I consented to them, rather they are just a result of OCD (or so I think). It’s like the more I am aware that I must not be racist, the more they pop up.
Anyway, I confessed this because another priest had told me to just dump these thoughts in the confessional and forget about them.
This priest however, asked me if I had any black friends. I immediately said yes, then realised that none of my really close friends were black so started saying ‘well…’ or something like that, but then the priest starting speaking again. I was so afraid that I lied and thus invalidated my confession! I am friendly with lots of black people at my school and one of my friends who I used to be quite close to is mixed race. But none of my really close friends (I am not really that close to many people now) are white. I am scared that I lied to the priest to excuse myself.
Afterwards, I waited for the priest to come out of the confessional and told him about this and whether I would have to confess everything again. He said no, but I don’t think he really understood!
Do I have to confess everything again?
I am also scared as I think I have been exaggerating my sins at Confession. For example, I said I told small lies, when sometimes I cannot be sure whether something was a lie or whether I was just unsure of my opinion. Or I said I encouraged someone else to do something (which looking back I don’t think was even sinful) when I don’t think I did.
I am so confused, now I think my every confession has been invalid.
Also, has anyone else had experience of obsessive thoughts while AT confession? I felt I needed to keep on confessing them as they came to me, even though I did not consent to them.
