Hello everyone!
I was wondering about the gifts of the Holy Spirit. I know that there are the official seven gifts of the Holy Spirit (as shown in Isaiah 11:2: And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.), but I was wondering if things like prophecy and speaking in tongues are also gifts of the Holy Spirit, and if so, what differentiates them from the ones in Isaiah 11:2?
Also, does a Catholic have to be confirmed in order to have a special gift like speaking in tounges, or just baptised?
Also, what would you call the gift of having an understanding of some things that one could not have deduced by one’s own reason, such as events of certain things that will happen in the future or whether or not God wants one to do a certain thing, if such a “gift” comes from God?
Blessings in Christ,

You know the there are seven gifts, but only list six.

The Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church has

“The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit:
  1. Wisdom
  2. Understanding
  3. Counsel
  4. Fortitude
  5. Knowledge
  6. Piety
  7. Fear of the Lord”
These are in the Order of Confirmation:
  1. Then the Bishop lays hands over all those to be confirmed (as do the Priests who are associated with him). But the Bishop alone says:
Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

who brought these your servants to new birth

by water and the Holy Spirit,

freeing them from sin:

send upon them, O Lord, the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete;

give them the spirit of wisdom and understanding,

the spirit of counsel and fortitude,

the spirit of knowledge and piety;

fill them with the spirit of the fear of the Lord.

Through Christ our Lord.

R. Amen .

The Compendium also has in Appendix B, at http://www.vatican.va/archive/compendium_ccc/documents/archive_2005_compendium-ccc_en.html#B) :
“The twelve fruits of the Holy Spirit:
  1. Charity
  2. Joy
  3. Peace
  4. Patience
  5. Kindness
  6. Goodness
  7. Generosity
  8. Gentleness
  9. Faithfulness
  10. Modesty
  11. Self-control
  12. Chastity”

Douay-Rheims Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is, charity, joy, peace, patience, benignity, goodness, longanimity,23 Mildness, faith, modesty, continency, chastity. Against such there is no law.

1 Corinthians 13:13 And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love.

but I was wondering if things like prophecy and speaking in tongues are also gifts of the Holy Spirit, and if so, what differentiates them from the ones in Isaiah 11:2?
Those are called charisms or charismata. They are not given to all Christians, but to some for edification of all. Lists of them can vary, but here is a pretty comprehensive one from the Catholic Encyclopdia:

the Apostolate;
the cognate office of prophecy;
the discerning of spirits;
the office of teacher;
the word of wisdom and science;
helps;
the gift of governing.
increased faith;
the power of miracles;
in specie the healing of the sick;
the gift of tongues;
the interpretation of tongues.
