Hi everyone, I just wanted to ask for some help. It’s my first year teaching faith formation and I’m having a hard time explaining stuff to my kids in a way that they would understand and remember, and I think that a really good analogy will help me do both. For instance, I don’t know how to help them understand what holy means in the context of living a holy life and keeping the Lord’s day holy. So can anyone tell me of any good analogies that I can use to explain what holy is? Thanks.

Need age/grade.
Also, what kind of formation as a catechist have you had prior to this?
You should look into Basic Catechist certification through your Diocese. They have free classes/workshops on methodology as well as topical info.
Ask to see the Scope and Focus chart fro the catechetical materials (textbooks) you are using. Ask to meet with the rep from the company that sells your parish the materials. I have found that these people are very good with hints, tips fro classroom management, and also give you a thorough explanation of what should be covered at grade level.
For ex: I had a catechist that struggled with teaching the 7 Deadly sins. Guess what? That’s not n the curriculum for 4th graders. What was he doing introducing something not covering in the chapter? The chapter referred to explaining the concept of sin and culpability. No mention of the seven deadlies. He went outside of what should be taught, and no surprise it backfired.
Your DRE is a great source of inspiration and assistance. Talk to him or her!
Maybe observe a seasoned successful catechist as well when you get a chance.
