Hello,
Our conversation topic during dinner last night was about our names and their meanings. My son’s middle name is Jesus, and he explained how his teacher knows that the prenounciation of the name should be pronounces with a Spanish accent.

But the true question that stumped me is when he asked “Why could I not be named God?”. After I explained “you can not take the Lord’s name in vain”…I second guessed myself…Did I answer correctly?

You answered correctly but also you could add, being there is only one God, only he can have that name.

God is more or less an adjective then just a name. after all “god” is a common noun but “God” is a proper noun because it emphasises a more powerful position. But Jesus is name given to a mortal man who was also God. If you recall the old testament, He is referred to as “I am” or the unamed god. The fact that God doesn’t have an actual name seems to magnify the importance. In islam tradition, God is refered to the god with no face. He is everything and nothing.

I don’t remember where I read it but there was a story where a man goes to heaven or something and i believe he is greeted by angels or spirits. And he tells the spirits/beings what his name is. And he asks who they are. But they don’t have names. They are not defined by their names. He asks why they do not have names to call each other and the beings say. we know who we are and who each other is. When you come to know yourself, you will not need a name either. Something like that.
