Ug, nobeer… you are muddying up the water again.
Homosexuality, the tendency to find members of the same sex attractive and to desire them as sex partners, is not intrinsically evil. It is a condition which exists inside a person and may or may not be acted upon. It is no more sinful than my love for Cadbury Cream Eggs.
Homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered, and if committed with full knowledge that they are wrong and with defiant intention to do wrong even in that knowledge, amount to mortal sin. Just like if I were to be aware of what the sin of gluttony is and eat 400 Cadbury Cream Eggs anyway.
It the same thing as sadness and anger at God. They are normal human feelings. BUT if we choose to nurture sadness into despair, which is an active and chosen rejection of God’s mercy, if we choose to take anger and start trying to lead others away from God, telling them how unmerciful He is, THEN we have sinned. Feelings are not sin, actions can be.
If someone goes and tells this wife that she is intrinsically evil (beyond redemption) simply because she has these feelings and desires, how would that make her open to healing or saving her marriage? It would be unwise in the extreme, and it would be a misrepresentation of Church teaching. If we do that knowingly, then WE are the ones sinning against her by driving her away from God’s mercy!
Please, we need to keep these lines clear, not only for the OP and his wife, but for any other struggling people reading this who might be getting the wrong idea and give up hope because of it.
P.S. Where is this idea that all sins are equal coming from? Sounds Protestant to me… because the Catholic Church recognizes two levels of sin, venial and mortal, based in part upon Paul’s teaching about some sins being “deadly” and others not.
