are cusswords a sin to the catholic church. I dont goto apologetics because it takes a year to get response. If cusswords arnt sinful why cant our children say them? why cant we use them on here?

Confused

That is a very good question, that I am not sure if I have the right answer to. The biggest cuss words are using God’s name in vain, they are much higher than any others in terms of severity. I believe that the rule of “Love thy neighbor” plays a large role in cuss words. So, it is not necessarily the word that is bad but the context in which you say it. If it degrades a person, or if it is more severe (i.e. calling for somebody’s eternal suffering) than it is a sin. I’m not positive on this, anybody care to correct me?

I think you are right, SGT…also in certain company the use of cusswords can be offensive and to use them knowing this, is an offence against brotherly love, charity. Probably best not to use them or get into the habit of using them and I would not allow children to use them personally …Blessings - Barb:)

An Orthodox priest’s wrife wrote an interesting article about “dirty words.”

She pointed out that sounds and syllables are hardly dirty in themselves. A farmer can hardly afford to be coy or always clinical when referring to his animals’ digestive and reproductive and eliminative functions.

What makes words dirty, she opined, is the hatred and anger with which they are said.

I first read “crosswords” and got worried because that is a favorite recreation.

if you mean by cusswords, actual cursing, saying “damn you” and meaning it, trying to invoke a curse on someone, that is a grave sin agains both the 1st and 2nd commandment because it assumes a supernatural power belonging only to God and attempts to manipulate it, and of course because of the wish to harm another person.

if you mean profanity and vulgarity, the former is a mortal sin if it denigrates the human body and the natural function and beauty of the body as designed by its Creator. (the words we do not type on a family forum that will be ** out by the eidtor)

Vulgarity can be mortal or venial depending on factors like ignorance, intent, scandal etc. To the extent it is a verbal attack on another person, it can be gravely sinful. Jesus says anyone who curses his brother or even calls him “blockhead” commits murder.

We forbid our children to speak this way because we want them to love others, to obey the commandments, and to grow up courteous, polite, literate and respectful members of society. We do not want them to display ignorance and crassness, and even more, we do not want them to sin.

If one needs to use ordinary scientific, medical terminology in ordinary conversation use the proper word in the context intended, and teach children the proper words, not popular vulgar slang, and teach them to respect the words as they would the bodies being described.

If you mean using God’s name in vain, again sins against 1st and 2nd commandments, gravely sinful to the extent it is willfull, deliberate and there is intent to blaspheme. We teach children to obey these commandments because we teach them to know, love and serve God with all their hearts, minds and wills, and this language is not compatible with that conformity.

thank you this helped. okay so now curious.

Is the below statement right? This is what I think you all meant.

Cusswords are okay as long as they dont curse anyone or insult anyone. Lords name in vain is obviously sinful. Saying the F word is obviously sinful.

Is this all right? this is what im getting from you all. do I understand?

not really
who made the statement?
where did it come from?
no “cusswords is not okay”. period. unless the speaker wishes to demonstrate ignorance and illiteracy he should strive to aquire a real vocabulary.

if you already received an answer from your priests, who understands the context of your question, you don’t need mine or anyone elses, so why not end this useless discussion?

Do not use the toung your Lord has given you to use bad words for God made your toung to praise him
