Although I grew up Catholic, there were several years spent away from the Church and admittedly there is lot I do not know and am trying to learn… When offered a cookie today and expressing I was abstaining from chocolate, a fellow coworker turned to me and balked "You know… that was NOT the Church’s original intention… " and stopped herself. She is the daughter of an Episcopal Minister who, knowing my faith, feels the obsessive/compulsive need to point out the various ways in which Catholicism and it’s traditions are “Wrong” and always manages to make me feel completely ignorant if I allow her to continue. I turned to her and said I didn’t have any desire to argue religion with her today and she stopped… but can someone enlighten me (forgive my ignorance please): #1: Is there something about the Episcopalian faith in particular that causes what can only be described as outright anger with regards to Catholicism? Or is it just her that gets so angry when she’s reminded I’m Catholic? and… 2) How can I best respond with criticisms of the Catholic tradition to give something up during lent? I really don’t have much desire to argue with her, but it’s getting to the point where I don’t have much a choice…
