For some reason, perhaps from teaching 8th grade RE, I recall one of the obligations of faithful Catholics was to continue learning the faith…

I thought it was a precept but when I looked in the Catechism (2041-2043) it wasn’t there…

Does anyone know where I can find it in the catechism? If it’s not a precept what else could it be?

In the CCC 1783-85 concerning conscience. Also, in The Companion to the Catechism of the Catholic Church under no. 1785 it quotes from the document *Dignitatis humanae *14 which states in part; “The disciple has a grave obligation to Christ, his Master, to grow daily in his knowledge of the truth he has received from him, to be faithful in announcing it and vigorous in defending it wothout have recourse to methods which are contrary to the spirit of the Gospel.”

I’m sure if you go to AskJeeves.com you can find the entire document on line.

I think banjo’s response is very sold. Another way to view it is in light of the obligations and rights we have in the Church. I offer just a part of this.

The Christian faithful must maintain communion with the Church (canon 209 §1) and must direct their efforts to lead a holy life and to promote the growth of the Church and its continuing sanctification, according to their own condition (Canon 210).

As well, the Christian faithful have the duty and the right to work so that the divine message of salvation more and more reaches all people in every age and in every land (Canon 211).

Because of this, we enjoy the right mentioned in canon 217: “Since they are called by baptism to lead a life in keeping with the teaching of the gospel, the Christian faithful have the right to a Christian education by which they are to be instructed properly to strive for the maturity of the human person and at the same time come to know and live the mystery of salvation.”

Where there is a right like this, there is an implicit obligation.
