Need Help with Question

There is a gay politician here in CA and they have done great work for our city. They are seeking higher office and have asked for my support. While I absolutely agree with their facial views my concern is that if I were to support them and donate money they may work against Prop 8 (Defense of marriage). What should I do…? Would it be a sin to support them?

It can be assumed that the politician is living the gay lifestyle, if so you would be directly suporting his agenda which is against the Church’s teaching, you would be condoning their sin and as such sharing in it.
It is certain that his veiws are incompatble with many of the Church’s teaching including abortion.

It is a GRAVE [meaning a MORTAL SIN] to give ANY support to a pro anti Catholic -Teaching candidate UNLESS [none seem to exist here] there is an off setting good to come from it.

This depends on what the choices are. Most politicians support divorce laws. As Catholics we oppose divorce. Yet, we’re not obligated not to vote at all.

There are some key areas that one sins if one votes for a candidate specifically because of their views on these areas, especially: abortion, euthanasia, and gay marriage.

However, we can still vote for a pro-choice candidate if for example all the other candidates are pro-choice, but the candidate we’re voting for is the least pro-choice.

Ordinarily we should not do so, but Catholics are never obligated NOT to vote.

The OP probably should not support the candidate mentioned, but should keep in mind what the opposition’s views are on Catholic non-negotiables. In addition there are some gay politicians that are pro-life and oppose gay marriage, as odd as this seems.
