I know that a lot of people say they do tai chi or yoga for just the exercise and not the spirituality…but these practices were developed in order to serve spirits, deities or forces other than God. The entire construction of the movements is done in a way that serves a purpose, and that is a non-Christian spiritual purpose. It is like playing a Ouija board just for “fun” and not to actually contact spirits. The instrument is there. Our bodies are also instruments of worship, just as we can bow before God and praise him with our bodies, so can we dishonor him. The term new age doesn’t mean things are “new”, it is an outlook on life that often calls on ancient practices and adapts them to the current trends. This can be dangerous because they appear watered-down and friendly (sort of like how they sell Ouija boards in the toy aisle next to Monopoly and Checkers).

There are other fitness techniques like Pilates that have been developed from a purely physical, muscular point of view and have no spiritism attached to them.
And I’ve heard people accuse Pilates of being 'New Agey." 🤷

Catholics are NOT forbidden from doing Tai Chi. It is NOT New Age. It is simply excercise and a form of martial art. The priests I know who practice it are in fact very traditional priests who would be the last to do anything against Church teachings.

If we accepted your view then Catholics would not be allowed to do any type of martial arts which of course would be ridiculous.

Show us an official Church document stating Tai Chi is forbidden and by that I don’t mean a newspaper article with the opinion of an individual.
How is this even a discussion? New Age? It’s been around since the Qing Dynasty… I’ve been taking Tai Chi for two weeks now and it has done nothing but improve my mental, physical, and spiritual health. If you think meditation is New Age and/or opens your soul to the devil, you have no idea what you are talking about. Ever heard of cotemplative prayer? Thomas Merton, St Teresa De Avil, St Gemma? All Catholic, all undergoe times of complete ecstacy born out of inner silence and oneness with The Creator. Ancient Chinese practices including hollistic medicine need to be strongly examined and scrutinized by The Church, but not so we can find Satan in it’s workings but rather so we can understand it’s meaning and it’s documented success. The earth used to be flat, and The Church wanted to kill Galileo for disproving we are not the center of the universe, remember…?

Hello I have read all of this discussion on different types of meditation and I was moved to share some information to those who seek the truth. I say a prayer for all who will read this to ask the Holy Spirit to direct them to his truth. ourladyswarriors.org/dissent/centerprayer.htm

We’re not allowed to discus Centering Prayer and so I’ll just say that having been doing Centering Prayer for over 30 years, the article in your link is false and filled with errors.

PM me if you want the truth behind Centering Prayer and it’s origin in the Catholic Tradition of Contemplative Prayer.

I know the truth and it’s what the church says it is. I would never go against it due to my own desires. Everyone has their own choice to make weather to follow it or not. That is all from me. May the peace and love of Christ be with you

The Church hasn’t said anything against Centering Prayer, because she would have to reject Contemplation which comes from God and the Church can not do this, for she can not error in matters of faith and morals. Centering Prayer is prayer, and the Holy Father is not going to tell people to stop praying.

The article you posted only serves to keep yourself and others who read it, misguided.

But, again, we can’t discuss CP but it didn’t prevent you from attacking it by posting a bogus article about it.

Only God can guide you, but you must be open to God, not people with agendas of their own.

Centered In Christ Jesus

I just got an update of this old thread into my email. It always gets me going. Traditional Tai Chi Chuan is a martial art that has the side effect of improving your health. It does have some practices that go deeper than say aerobics and I can see how a super traditional catholic would avoid it. For instance there is a principle call Yi that doesn’t really have an equivalent in the west. It is a kind of inward concentration that you develop. In general practicing will turn your focus and senses inward. It takes a lot longer to gain fighting ability from it than say boxing or wrestling, but once you get it the power and speed is quite incredible. Sometimes I spar full contact with good boxers, kick boxers and different martial artists and I do all right. But not as much cos I am almost 40 now and these young mma guys hit really hard. There is new age type tai chi as well, but there are new age versions of everything these days. I dislike eckhart tolle as much as the next guy on here. Traditional tai chi chuan has nothing to do with that sort of thing. When I was a teenager I studied tai chi with an elderly master from china for 6 years. He was an acupuncture doctor. He never once mentioned anything to do with spirituality and never really talked about energy either. It was all studying how to use your body, mind and breath in tandem. I have practiced now for almost 20 years. In that time I have been blessed with good health. I can’t remember the last time I had a cold during the winter and I rarely need to take any sort of medication or visit a doctor. If you want to learn tai chi chuan for health benefits it is good, if you want to learn for self defense it is far easier to study boxing or jiu jitsu or that type of thing but it pays off in the long run.

Curious, why would you mention Echart Tolle in all of this?

He has nothing to do with Tai Chi, and I’ve never seen him write about it.

Hi yeah that’s the point i was trying to make, a few of the previous posts were arguing that tai chi chuan is a new age practice. I was saying that it wasn’t. To me Echart Tolle is the definition of new age. Like when someone says new age Echart Tolle just pops up in my head. Just trying to say that traditional tai chi chuan isn’t new age.

Except that what Tolle teaches isn’t New Age, but has been taught by both Eastern and Catholic Spiritual masters for centuries.

Even Archbishop Fulton Sheen taught about living in the present, and detaching from the ego, which is the main point of Tolle’s teachings.

His teachings only seem New Age, because he presents the information in contemporary language to an audience who have not heard it before and are embracing it outside of Christianity.

I’ve read Echart Tolle, St. John of the Cross, St Augustine and others. Nothing he is presenting is new or contradictory to Catholic teaching for the most part.

He is not a Christian however and does not teach Christianity, even though he often quotes Scripture and Christian Saints like St Augustine. One has to keep in mind that he is not presenting Christian Spirituality exclusively, but spirituality from across the board of the main stream religions and philosophies.

Truth is truth, regardless who presents it and we do not reject it, just because it comes from a source other than Catholicism.

BTW, the term “New Age,” is used more broadly these days from what it originally was, when it involved Astrology, Tarrot Card readings and receiving energy from crystals.

Tolle doesn’t go near these ideas and would most likely reject them.

R u kidding me! U should inform ur self much more on the teachings of eckhart tolle. He denies Christ. inner-growth.info/power_of_now_tolle/eckhart_tolle_oprah_chapter_01.htm

This is one of the webcast from eckhart and oprah. U can read and see for ur self. He is very deceiving
I said Tolle is not Christian.

Also, I have watched all of the Oprah series with Echart Tolle. He doesn’t deny Jesus per se. He doesn’t have faith in him as Son of God, but many have not received the gift of His revelation.

Not being Christian doesn’t make what he teaches wrong, even the Church agrees with what is true, even though it may come from a person who is not Catholic.

Wow, I will be praying for u my brother in Christ and all who this man is deceiving
We are much better off reading solely on the Saints. At least we know there is no a chance of being led astray. It’s not worth the risk. They offer us all we need in this life to assure our eternal salvation. Better to be safe than sorry is all I’m saying. I trust those who have suffered dearly for Christ to lead me to heaven. Peace

Especially in this day and age where there is deception at every turn. The lives of the saints are an invaluable treasure to have in these times to keep us on the straight and narrow. One can’t go wrong. They can teach one at best how to enter into a oneness with Our Lord

If you’re led astray by Echart Tolle, your faith isn’t true to begin with.

Tolle teaches nothing different than Archbishop Fulton Sheen and other Catholic authors, with regards to living in the present and detaching from ego-identity attachments.

In fact, Echart Tolle teachings are more basic psychology than spirituality.

But if you’re insecure in your faith, don’t read his or anyone’s books which aren’t Catholic.

I am very secure in my faith but I also know that satin is much smarter than I and so I won’t let him have his chance to have his way with me causing me to be deceived. That is playing with fire. Man tends to rely so much these days on wanting to have all the feel good feelings that he no longer knows how to use his intellect. It’s not about feelings and Jesus and the Saints prove that with suffering and sacrifice. I feel sorry for you. I’m leaving this forum but I will be praying for The Lord to grace u with his light of Truth.

If a person’s writings lead you away from Christ, you might not be secure in your faith and so by all means, stay away from them.

But keep in mind, there are those who claim to be Catholic and their teachings will in lead you away from a deeper relationship with Christ if you follow them.

There are people who finding the doctrines of the Church attractive, became or remain Catholic, but have yet to become Christian. St Augustine learned wrote about such people…

Sharon Lee Giganti is a Catechist i.e. a CCD teacher, and former beauty Queen.

She’s not a theologian, philosopher, nor an expert in spirituality in the Catholic Church and I’ve seen her misleading articles before. Catholics are more likely mislead by her than Echart Tolle.

But this has nothing to do with the topic of the thread, and I’m done trying to explain futher.
