Ok I don’t think that’s right, someone told me we can’t talk about a bad priest no matter what he does you can’t talk about them? Is that right because I think bad priests are like wolves, and they give the good priests the true men of god a bad name they ruin the Catholic Church and cause people to leave it that’s my opinion on bad priest or evil priests but what does the bible say about this? Am I wrong?

In general if you’re simply gossiping or spreading a juicy story, that’s wrong, because your motivation is wrong.
If you’re trying to correct a problem, you would want to talk to somebody who is discrete, and/or able to fix the problem.
Sometimes you may have to come forward in the context of an investigation.
There’s no hard “yes” or “no” to this question.

We should be very careful how we talk about priests and there should be a certain respect due to their vocation. None of that means anyone should tolerate or conceal sins of a priest that do actual harm.

“talk bad about”? is so vague. But I can tell you this type of thinking has led to many many victims of not only physical or sexual abuse but bad theology…

I absolutely apologetically will “talk bad about” someone or something that is deserving.

What I mean is, if a priest molests a child can I say that’s wrong? Because someone told me you can’t say it’s wrong that priests are beyond reproach, they said only God can say there wrong no matter what they do we can’t talk about it or say they’re wrong I’m sorry I didn’t phrase it properly I’m no good with my words

Yes.

Well that person is gravely mistaken.

Of course you can say it is wrong! Silence may lead to further victims. Perhaps you misunderstood what the person was saying. We do have to be careful not to say things we are unsure of about priests. There are so many victims but there are also people willing to lie who hurt both real victims and the church in doing so.

I don’t know who told you that but that person should be reported to the diocese. That is such a dangerous statement that I would worry that they are spreading it.

Can you tell me what the bible says or the Catholic Church says about it so I can copy and paste it and send it to my friend

Hi what did you mean by your answer? Did you mean report the priest to the diocese or report the person who said you can never talk bad about one?

I would not gossip about them just like I wouldn’t want to gossip about anyone. If there is some aspect of their behavior you feel needs to be changed and saying it could help than go for it, but be careful not to spread rumors or gossip

Definitely report the perpetrator (if there is actual reason to believe that evil has been done). If the one telling you to not report it is in a position of authority of some sort (like on the parish council or w/e) then report them as well; if it is just a friend, then don’t report but correct them.

Speaking for the US, when someone is accused of a crime, when they are on trial, they are considered innocent until proven guilty. I would not be running around telling people “Mr Jones IS a murderer” until Mr Jones has been found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt by the preponderance of the evidence.

On the other hand, if you witness Mr Jones killing someone, even if Mr Jones is Fr Jones or even Pope Jones, you are bound by charity to call the police.

You asked for proof, thing is, it is impossible to prove a negative, so we cannot prove the Church does not teach that priests are impeccable and beyond reproach. The duty is on your friend making the claim to provide evidence.

We are bound to speak the truth and exercise prudence in the Catechism:

2475 Christ’s disciples have "put on the new man, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness."274 By “putting away falsehood,” they are to "put away all malice and all guile and insincerity and envy and all slander."275

[2476] False witness and perjury . When it is made publicly, a statement contrary to the truth takes on a particular gravity. In court it becomes false witness.276 When it is under oath, it is perjury. Acts such as these contribute to condemnation of the innocent, exoneration of the guilty, or the increased punishment of the accused.277 They gravely compromise the exercise of justice and the fairness of judicial decisions.

2477 Respect for the reputation of persons forbids every attitude and word likely to cause them unjust injury.278 He becomes guilty:
  • of rash judgment who, even tacitly, assumes as true, without sufficient foundation, the moral fault of a neighbor;
  • of detraction who, without objectively valid reason, discloses another’s faults and failings to persons who did not know them;279
  • of calumny who, by remarks contrary to the truth, harms the reputation of others and gives occasion for false judgments concerning them.
2478 To avoid rash judgment, everyone should be careful to interpret insofar as possible his neighbor’s thoughts, words, and deeds in a favorable way:

Every good Christian ought to be more ready to give a favorable interpretation to another’s statement than to condemn it. But if he cannot do so, let him ask how the other understands it. And if the latter understands it badly, let the former correct him with love. If that does not suffice, let the Christian try all suitable ways to bring the other to a correct interpretation so that he may be saved.280

[2479] Detraction and calumny destroy the reputation and honor of one’s neighbor . Honor is the social witness given to human dignity, and everyone enjoys a natural right to the honor of his name and reputation and to respect. Thus, detraction and calumny offend against the virtues of justice and charity.

That is completely untrue. Pay no attention to this person.

If it is public knowledge - as those reported via news media/ the press, then we can talk about what happened. We can judge the deed - what was done - whether it is morally wrong or right .

We can judge objectively whether abortion, murder, rape, robbery with violence etc is wrong, as well as whether it’d be wrong to have a second helping of dessert when we are full, for example. We are always judging whether what we do is wrong or right. But we shouldn’t judge a persons’ motives, nor should we judge when we don’t have all the facts especially as the main stream media tends to sensationalize matters .

We also have to be careful when discussing these things to not make statements that really our just our opinions, but state them in such a way that they come across as facts, certainties when we can’t know (as we weren’t there, but can only know what is reported in the news). E.g. what @TheLittleLady said above regarding quotes from the catechism - rash judgments, detraction and calumny.

Not in the sense of gossiping I don’t really gossip or have interest in it, it was on the news about a priest on trial for molesting someone that’s how it all started, because in my opinion a man who does that isn’t a man of God , my question is not about gossiping my question is am I aloud to acknowledge what he did was wrong not in a gossiping way because my friends think you absolutely cannot and it’s only God who can say that they are in the wrong and you should never ever talk about it to matter what the priest did even if proven guilty and I just feel in my heart that’s not the case

Hi what did you mean by your answer? Did you mean report the priest to the diocese or report the person who said you can never talk bad about one?
Well both! If you know the priest is doing something bad, report it. If you know there is a person encouraging an environment of fear of disclosure report them.

And with things that are not abuse related I still stand by “talking” about what a priest said or did. I have been vocal about priests who teach wrongly and endanger others. Also, there are situations where even if the priest has not been convicted of a crime, the public or at least the Catholics should know. When it comes to my children’s bodies or their souls, I’m a big fan of openness of communication of the laity.

In the culture of abuse parents will punish their own children for accusing a priest because of the attitude of this person who says these things to you. No matter how well meaning they may be, the attitude is dangerous.
