In a discussion about osas I received this response:
Sin separates us from God before we are redeemed. Now that you are redeemed and restored back into fellowship with God as your Father, what kind of Father is your God - that he would separate you from Him the first moment you commit a sin - and/or if you do that just before you die?
Are you able to be perfect and never sin once you receive Christ? If so, have you never sinned since becoming a Christian? Do you think God has those bases covered? (maybe better said, your back covered?) Do you believe what He said, “He who has begun a good work in you will see it to completion?”
Would you send your child to hell for eternity or somewhere in limbo (purgatory) the moment he/she sinned after believing and receiving Christ?
What does the scriptures say about this and how are we to understand the the heart of God correctly concerning these grave issues?
All of a sudden I feel on the defensive so I’ve been praying that I handle this in a charitable way. How should I answer this individuals questions about salvation? Do I answer the questions with a question?

Thanks and God bless,

ZP, you might consider the following (my comments in red):

Sin separates us from God before we are redeemed. Now that you are redeemed and restored back into fellowship with God as your Father, what kind of Father is your God - that he would separate you from Him the first moment you commit a sin - and/or if you do that just before you die?

When one sins, one is refusing to love God. Remember that Jesus said, “IF you love Me, obey My Commandments.” 1 Cor 6:9-10 says,
9Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals,
10nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God.
Are you able to be perfect and never sin once you receive Christ? If so, have you never sinned since becoming a Christian? Do you think God has those bases covered? (maybe better said, your back covered?) Do you believe what He said, “He who has begun a good work in you will see it to completion?” Evidently we cannot enter heaven if we have unrepented serious sin on our souls when we die.

Would you send your child to hell for eternity or somewhere in limbo (purgatory) the moment he/she sinned after believing and receiving Christ?

I am not God. God is both infinitely merciful, and infinitely just. If God doesn’t send unrepentent sinners to hell, then He is not just. Justice and mercy are both rooted in truth, which is rooted in love.

What does the scriptures say about this and how are we to understand the the heart of God correctly concerning these grave issues?

Again, among many other Scriptures, see 1 Cor 6:9-10. God is not Barney (purple dinosaur on kid’s show). God is a jealous God. He is loving, but He is also righteous. I think the main problem with folks these days is that they don’t understand the true nature of love. They have this idea that love is merely a “good feeling” or “warm fuzzies.” It’s not. The ultimate act of love was Jesus suffering and dying on the cross for us! I guarantee you there were no “good feelings” or “warm fuzzies” involved there! Our culture has perverted love from its true meaning. Along with that, our culture has no idea what sin is. Sin is saying, “No!” to God. When Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden, they ate the forbidden fruit. It was the first sin. It wasn’t a case where they were “hurting” anyone. The fruit wasn’t dangerous. It was pleasing to the eye, desireable, delicious, etc. The bottom line was that God said, “No!” And they said, “Yes!” They disobeyed God. That’s what sin is.

As an aside, Jesus left us a Church to guide us into all truth with regard to His teaching. He didn’t leave us the Bible. The Bible is a subset of the “Word of God.” The whole Word of God is contained in Holy Tradition, much of which was eventually written down and eventually selected for the canon of the New Testament in the fourth century by the bishops of the Catholic Church under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. 1 Tim 3:15 says the Church is the “pillar and foundation of truth.” It doesn’t say the Bible is such a thing. Jesus created a teaching, preaching Church. Faith comes by hearing, the Bible says. It doesn’t say faith comes by reading and self-interpreting. The result of self-interpreting Scripture (which 2 Peter 1:20 speaks against) has been the creation of over 30,000 man-made, doctrinally disagreeing Protestant denominations in the last 500 years. For the first 1000 years, there was but one Christian Church, the Catholic Church. In 1054 A.D., the Orthodox split off. The real splintering didn’t start until 1517 A.D., when an ex-Catholic monk, Martin Luther, started the Reformation. And Protestantism is such that the splintering will never end, because there is no final authority. Every individual is his/her own final authority with regard to interpreting Scripture. So, you end up with thousands and thousands of contradictory interpretations instead of relying on the interpretations and teachings of the Apostles and their successors which can only be found in the Catholic Church, who alone, has been around since the time of Jesus.

“what kind of Father is your God - that he would separate you from Him the first moment you commit a sin - and/or if you do that just before you die?”
  1. He does not separate you from Him, you do! He is a loving Father who allows you to exercise your free will. He does not prevent you from rejecting Him. What kind of love is forced upon you? It isn’t love unless it is freely given. He does not restrict your actions, you chose to follow or not, freely. Do you really think a person who has been redeemed can not sin? Can not commit adultery, kill, lie, surly you know that’s ridiculous.
“Sin separates us from God before we are redeemed”
2. You are not redeemed until you are judged. You are not judged until you have died. After you are judged worthy to enter His kingdom you are safe.
Once saved always saved is actually correct, what they have wrong is when you are saved. You’re not saved until He judges you. You don’t get to judge yourself “redeemed”.

Would you send your child to hell for eternity or somewhere in limbo (purgatory) the moment he/she sinned after believing and receiving Christ?

He’s got the idea of God waiting to catch you in a sin so He can punish you. That isn’t God. God loves you, He gives you every opportunity to follow Him. It takes a knowledge, willingness, and understanding of a serious matter to commit a mortal sin. It’s a rejection of God. For a Christian to sin is serious. It isn’t a momentary lapse. It’s deliberate rejection. You expect God to turn His head? That’s not love.

Hit him with the Scriptures have to say about the man-made myth of OSAS:

2 Timothy 2:12
“If we endure, we shall also reign with Him; If we deny Him, He also will deny us”.

1 Corinthians 10:12 “Therefore let him who thinks he is standing, beware, that he does not fall”.

2 Chronicles 15:2 “If you search for him, he will let himself be found by you; but if you leave him, he will leave you”.

2 Peter 2:20-21 “They were made free from the evil in the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. But if they return to evil things and those things control them, then it is worse for them than it was before. Yes, it would be better for them to have never known the right way than to know it and to turn away from the holy teaching that was given to them.”

Matthew 10:22 "And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved.

Matthew 24:13 "But he who endures to the end shall be saved.

Hebrews 10:26-27 “For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries.”

Hebrews 10:29 “How much worse punishment do you think will be deserved by those who have spurned the Son of God, profaned the blood of the covenant by which they were sanctified, and outraged the Spirit?”

There are a couple of things that strike me about this persons answer to you the biggest is how he seems to try and break everything down to “Black and White” - “Sin and Perfection”. He does not seem to be allowing any room for God’s mercy.

I am reminded of a quote from St Catherine of Sienna about how we choose our destination when we die. (I have it in the book “The Fulfillment of All Desire”)
Basically God is telling Catherine that, as christinas we are to progress in Holiness and work toward the perfection of Love of God and neighbor. The degree to which we achieve this perfection at our death causes us to do one of two things.
The person who has become “perfected” in Love, will reach out to that Love and immediately be drawn into heaven
The person who has not been perfected in Love will reach out for God’s mercy and forgiveness. This person will be immediately drawn to purgatory to complete their perfection.
This is the case for the True Christians.
Those who have not committed themselves to the Love of God and neighbor, those who are worldly, those who are sinful, will reach out and embrace that sin as their own and fall immediately into damnation. It will be by their choice and not God’s that they are condemned.
These choices are made by the “heart” of who we are, by the very real choices we make during our lives that are either “For” or “Against” the Love of God.

With this in mind, let’s take a look at how to answer these questions:
*Sin separates us from God before we are redeemed.

(maybe better said, your back covered?) Do you believe what He said, “He who has begun a good work in you will see it to completion?”*
Yes sin seperates us from God - both before and and after we are “redeemed” for sin is something that, by definition, is contrary to God. The question is not one of whether sin seperates us, but whether that sin will condemn us.
When we sin, as Christians, should we not repent? Should we not confess to God our sin and ask his forgiveness? Should we not bemoan our own weakness in betraying the great Love given us by God by Baptism?
Yes sin seperates us - but true repentance restores us.
Repentance is the key. Repentance along with a commitment to “sin no more” is the way back to God from the state of “sin” which is a turning away from God.
  • Would you send your child to hell for eternity or somewhere in limbo (purgatory) the moment he/she sinned after believing and receiving Christ? *
This seems to ba a confused question. I cannot send my child to any of these places. Only God can do that. So this is a matter between God and His Child.
*What does the scriptures say about this and how are we to understand the the heart of God correctly concerning these grave issues? *
I am not a great “Chapeter and verse” man so I will only say this.
Jesus taught us that we must repent, and then act in accordance with that repentance. He taught a plan of salvation based upon the first two commandments - Love of God and Love of neighbor. Since we will act in accordance with what we truly believe, the Bible verse that says “you will know them by their Love” probably sums it up the best.
If you sin after baptism, you sin against the Love of God. If you sin against the Love of God and do not repent, you are seperating yourself from God.

Sorry if this is a bit disjointed.

Peace
James

My point exactly!

I am a teacher and used a teacher student analogy with him. As a teacher, I love all my students, even the ones who are disobedient at times. If they act in a way that they shouldn’t they are “punished” in one way or another (depending on the incident). If they are sorry for what they did, I accept that and we move on (there may be some “penance” involved like missing recess, an assembly, field trip, etc.). How about the “unrepentant” student? Yes, he/she is in class and does there work when he/she chooses. They will miss recess or any other punishment I see fit. But if they continue to separate themselves from me because of their behavior, what am I to do? They are the ones making the choices. Not me.

Does that make sense.

God bless,
ZP
