Need help writing a paper on the Novus Ordo Missae vs. the TLM

I am doing a research paper for my English Class (which has the topic of “The 1960’s”) on the Mass of Paul VI. *** Basically my thesis statement is that it was a mistake to change the Mass.***

Do you recommend any books on this topic?

I am already in the process of obtaining “The Ottaviani Intervention” and “The Rhine Flows into the Tiber”.

Any other resources (both in print and online) that you recommend?

An absolute must-read is Msgr. Klaus Gamber’s book, The Reform of the Roman Liturgy: Its Problems and Background, now happily back in print. There are reviews of this book here, here, and here. The author has received the accolades of none other than Card. Joseph Ratzinger and his critique is devastating. Certainly it should stop the mouths of those who claim that no public criticism of the Novus Ordo can ever be made, lest those who make it immediately be suspected of being on the dreaded trajectory toward schism. Basically, for all intents and purposes I stopped assisting at the Novus Ordo after reading this book.

To be fair, of course, you really should read some books that are in favor of the changes. I used to recommend the Whitehead/Likoudis book in this regard, but their continued defense of certain of their points even in the face of Summorum Pontificum has rendered it somewhat ridiculous. Perhaps others can recommend good treatments in defense of the liturgical changes.

The Mass has ALWAYS been “changed.”

Even with the promulgation of the Tridentine Missal by St. Pius V, it was continually tinkered with until 1962.

An incredibly inapt and unfortunately choice of words. The Holy See most certainly did not “tinker with” the Gregorian rite at any time prior to 1962. Any changes made were gradual and organic. Indeed, just by way of contrast with the startling nature of the changes we have seen since Vatican II, it was considered highly irregular and almost shocking that Pope John XXIII would add the name “St. Joseph” to the Roman Canon. That’s how “change adverse” the Church has traditionally been.

Msgr. Gamber, whom I reference above, has noted the sharp contrast we’ve witnessed since Vatican II:

Particularly pernicious in this respect is the incessant nature of the changes to which we are subjected. This is diametrically opposed to the concept of liturgy as our home. To constantly change a ritual and to abolish almost completely time-honored customs and traditions is synonymous with robbing a person of his religious home and thus shaking the foundations of his faith. (The Reform of the Roman Liturgy, p. 110)
