Hello,

I have a confession to make to you all:
I have scrupulosity ( I guess) I have had it for five years now. It is a living HELL! Personally, I want to blame it all on past troubles which include my Mom becoming half-insane, the divorce of my parents and other things.

It sometimes goes back and forth between religion and crime and so on and so forth. I’ve tried to be a bit more positive, I’ve gone to see a therapist, as well as thinking about taking medication and maybe exposure therapy.
I feel that these thoughts occur mandatorilly but I resist them because I don’t want them in my head and if I let them through, I feel like they would happen. And when that happens, I ward them away by hitting myself, making a pact with God, praying to Jesus… however, I admit that I may or may not make a slip-up in the warding off thing. Now, I’m worried about the state of my soul! I feel like my situation is the only one out there, though there are similarities to others.

It’s great that you are reaching out here, many people will be able to help you. I really wish I could, but my advice usually revolves around being more religious and spiritual – which I know tends to backfire for scrupulosity! Still, basic advice would be talking about this to a priest for guidance, and prayer + study. In any case, I have seen many great resources for scrupulosity floating around this forum, so I know that someone will be able to guide you. Don’t forget to nose around with the search function!

Some things that help me
  • exercise
  • reading
  • social activities
  • focusing on being virtuous rather than particular sins
Also recognize any other OCD tendencies you might have. Those are usually easier to combat and will help indirectly.

I have had struggles myself with OCD, which I believe is what is meant when you get thoughts that frighten or disgust you. I used to have thoughts of harming myself or others, or blasphemous thoughts in church. What helped me was repeating particular verses of scripture each time I was bothered:

*2 Tomothy 1: 7-For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound and disciplined mind.12 ; and I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day."

My theory was that if Satan gets the same reaction every single time, he gets tired of annoying us and backs off. I find the same sort of thing works for temptations too.
There are also some meds that are helpful.
You are certainly not the only one with this kind of problem. Will be praying for you. Keep in mind, God loves you and only allows this to help you become stronger.
I haven’t been bothered much for the last 30 years or so. So keep up the good fight.

I think the traditional advice is to get a regular confessor or spiritual director. I have had varying degrees of success.

I’ve also found that Ignatian spirituality is helpful. It’s similar to repeating a verse of scripture. There are spiritual “rules” to follow when encountered with distressing thoughts, etc.

I think the best thing to do is be proactive and find a way to fight that works for you.

It may sound simple but it works every time:

Regular Confession

Regular Mass

Regular Adoration

Regular Rosary

A plentiful supply of holy water, blessed oil and salt (exorcised) at home.

Use of sacramentals such as some Crucifixes in your home, sacred images etc.

Wear a blessed St Benedicts medal and Miraculous medal and Scapular.

“Act like you believe and you will believe like you act”.

This does not directly address a psychological condition, which may in fact require medication.

Perhaps it would help to seek spiritual healing for the things in your past that have affected you. THere is a wonderful healing ministry called Theophostic prayer. It was developed by a Christian psychologist who saw people in his practice struggling with the same issues over and over. He knew Jesus could heal people and developed a method pf prayer that invites Jesus to come into the past experience and combat the lies that were believed (which is what causes those experiences to affect us so much later). Once Jesus has replaced the lie with the truth we can be free to move forward from that emotional pain. You can google Theophostic healing and they even have a tool on the website to find a trained person near you. May God bless you.
