Has anyone gone through this?

I have been having a big problem about attending mass. I don’t know why, but over the last few months I am finding myself DREADING sundays. It’s not that I hate anything in the service, I get a lot out of it, although I admit I have been finding mass boring me out of my skull lately.

This has been gradually coming on over the last few months. I actually used to attend daily mass for a few months. I love the church, but I find that going to mass makes me dread the day. My husband is pretty good about making me go, but…I don’t want to be forced. I really want to WANT to go. Has anyone gone through this? Does anyone have any advice? The only thing I can think of is I went to a school where I was required to attend a protestant worship service AND church on the weekends, so I was going to church for 4 times a week, not to mention endless bible classes every day.

Any tips? Any advice? This is really making me hate myself so if you’re gunna say something mean, please don’t.

I think we all go through this type of thing at one time or another. Some call it a spiritual dryness. I know that personally, I go through rough spots and at other times, it’s like I can’t get enough of my faith. Maybe the next time you are feeling the dread of going to Mass, you could say a prayer and offer it up.

Maybe you could sign up to be a lector or something. Perhaps even an RCIA sponsor. Doing so may increase the longing you once had to go to church. Just my :twocents: , but maybe it’s worth a shot. 🙂

I’ll be praying for you in the meantime.

Thanks. I really do appreciate the prayers. The thing is, I used to be totally consumed by my faith when I first became a christian in a protestant church. It flickered when I went to college and then died. I managed to get a small flame going again when I became catholic but now it’s barely a smoldering coal anymore. It’s really scaring me.

:hug1: Aww, Delphinus85 - don’t despair! We all go through this. You are so not alone in this - even though I know it feels like it. The most important thing to remember is that God loves YOU and is there - all you have to do is pray to Him and he will help you. I found this website may be of some help. When you mentioned the flame, it brought to mind the Holy Spirit. Please don’t lose hope and know that your friends here at CAF are praying for you!

Both my mom and I have gone through something similar over the past two years or so. It was definitely beneficial that we went through it together. We have both been active in the Church for many years. Daily Mass, involved in different ministries, etc. When this started to occur we both kind of took a step back so to speak. Of course, we would still go on Sundays. That, you must do even if/when you dread it. But we did use some of our daily time to talk about things going on in our life over coffee and made some necessary changes in our life that were long overdue. Ex: Taking on a hobby or going to the gym. Something that is good for you. It was really good for our relationship personally and helped us both grow spiritually and emotionally. If it kills you to go, there is something else going on there and it will probably help you a lot to have someone you can talk about it with(preferably someone with a good sense of discernment). After some time passed, God has given us a stronger desire to spend more time with Him and it feels good knowing that it comes from our desire to be close to Him and not out of a sense of “well this is just what i have to do to become holy”.

almost forgot to mention…i’ll be praying for you. it can be soooo hard!

I see you are from the diocese of Seattle. Maybe you should try another parish. There are some good ones in the city. There is a big difference in how liturgy is done from place to place. The problem may not be you.

When I read your post Delphinus, I immediately thought two things. One is that you definitely need the Sacraments (Eucharist and Confession) as often as possible! If you can get to a daily mass/communion - great. Yes, what you’re going through is common, especially since you fairly recently came into the Church. Guess who is pouring on a little more attention? Especially if there is an easy weakness to be taken advantage of, as you mentioned. Also I agree with the previous poster who spoke of a different parish. Supposedly, the parishes in U. district and on Mercer Island are orthodox and may assist you in reverential acknowledgement/appreciation for the Eucharist.

I’ll also pray for you.

Thanks all. I think part of it might been I went to big time entertainment based churches where the more mushy feelings you felt, and the more entertained you were, they closer to God you were. I am obviously not entertained in the church, and I find all the 70-80’s songs that never end -_-

I am not in Seattle anymore. I actually had better luck there since I would just go to the cathedral and I NEVER felt bored/alone in there. I am still in washington, but out in the woods, where you have to go to YOUR parish. Plus, I think my husband’s family would disown us if we went elsewhere >.>
