Need ideas for a retirement celebration for my wife

My wife is retiring after 34 years of teaching kindergarten and first grade. I’m a dumb husband with zero ideas to celebrate.

She always likes dinner and a movie, but I’d appreciate any ideas you folks might have.

Congratulations to your wife, I am a retired teacher also and I know how difficult it is to teach for all those years. Over these 34 years of teaching I will bet you have heard your wife say things like…when I retire I am going to… If possible make one of those dreams come true. My husband and I like road trips to national parks and we took one to celebrate my retirement because I preferred that to a party. Maybe you should ask her what she would like to do so that you can give her something to look forward to.

Take her to dinner and a movie, in Hollywood! You could visit Universal Studios and shop at the Beverly Center in Los Angels. Or how about a few days at Las Vegas?

When my MIL retired the staff actually threw a party. They did it every year for anyone who was retiring. The retirees and their families did not pay, but everybody else contributed so much per person. There were gentle “roasts” of each retiree. Those were fun to listen to!

IIRC she and my FIL went on a road trip afterwards/long vacation. That’s just their thing they like doing, and they still do tons of it.
 
Congratulations to your wife for such a wonderful career!

34 years means there are lots of former students who are adults now.
It would be fun to have a celebration and invite or advertise if any former students live in the area they could come. This was done for Art Linkletter, the kid’s tv host from the 60’s, and I saw the show on youtube.
 
I like the idea of a party at the school.

My Grandmother spent the better part of 20 years working at a school for special needs children.

When she retired they threw her a big party with a “Wizard of Oz” theme…and a big cake that said “There is no place like home!”

When my mom retired from her office (20 something years, I think) they threw a party. There wasn’t much of a theme but I know that her best friend dropped the cake as they were bringing it out to her…there are some hilarious pictures of the cake (before and after shots).

I think a vacation is a nice idea too. Cruises are a lot of fun and can be done on a budget.
 
I vote for the cruise, if you can afford it, even if it is a short one. They can actually be very affordable if you keep your eyes open for a deal (and can plan one last minute when they are trying to fill the ship). We took our kids on one last November for not much more than a week at the beach.

I’d vote for a cruise for any type of celebration, though…lol.
 
If it was me, I would want a trip. Either a cruise to Alaska or a long train ride through the west or maybe even to Germany and Austria. Also, if it was me, I would have planned it long in advance and made provisions to be able to pay for it.
 
Those Viking River Cruises look great and they have everything included.

The European River cruise is spectacular , starting in Vienna , we did it,just amazing ,
 
We’ve been to lots of places in the United States, including Alaska, via car. We’ve been all over Mexico via car. We’ve done a family trip to seven countries in Europe via rental car.

We’ve never been on a cruise. The idea of being on a ship most of the time, and only being in port a few hours, just didn’t interest us at all. However, we have heard several friends rave about them, so it does pique our interest somewhat.

Money is getting tight now though, because we have to save for retirement. I spoke to her a few minutes ago, and she said her friend recommended some hotel in Dallas, so I guess that’s where we’re going.

Riverboat cruises in Europe are supposed to be way more fun.

Since you like to drive…a road trip all the way up highway #1 on the California coast is spectacular.

Yes, we drove some of Hwy 1 during our honeymoon over 30 years ago. I still remember how beautiful it was!

As for the riverboat cruises, the commercials do look intriguing. I may be wrong, but it’s my understanding that, since the rivers were an important means of travel in Europe’s early years, the architecture was oriented towards the rivers. If that’s correct, then I assume the riverboat cruises would offer the best views of the architecture, as opposed to driving.

Do you get to get off the boat and visit various places?

Oh yeah. All the time. And the places you see are like you describe…historic and lovely, not tourist traps with junk to sell. My co-worker and her hubs are avid (rabid) cruise takers. When they discovered the Riverboat cruises, they pretty much swore off of the others (except for a Disney cruise for the grandkids. They also say that the MOST relaxing and beautiful trip fro them is Aruba.
Another says France is like paradise. I guess it depends on whether you want to see sights, or just relax.
 
My daughter’s Kindergarten teacher is retiring this year. One of the parents had all the teachers in the school send a letter to former students of hers, asking that they include their favorite memory of the teacher and Kindergarten. She also asked for photos of the kids in Kindergarten to include in a type of yearbook. I think sentimental gifts are best!👍
I know you mentioned a celebration, and a trip would be awesome too!
 
Sentimental gifts are great.
But I also believe that a celebratory RESTFUL vacation is in order.
The sentimental things make everyone feel great.
I think hubs should make his wife feel great with a trip.
No stress, just languid days.
Build new memories that will last in a marriage long after the scrapbook is put in the closet.

Interesting idea. But I’d be shocked if the school would give me the addresses. This would be a serious violation of privacy.
 
This may be impossible, but how cool would it be to have letters from past students about how she affected them or good memories they have of her?

EDIT: Oops, just saw someone suggested this already!
