I am interested in adding fasting or sacrifices to my prayers and Catholic life. Does anyone had suggestions for getting started? I don’t want to do too much at once, and would like to slowly get going, so that I can keep it going long term.

Thanks,

Jon

Why not start with your favorite snacks…since they are not necessities.

Forever, or on certain days, similar to no meat on Fridays?
It doesn’t have to be forever, as we have times for celebrating and feasting.

Let the Holy Spirit guide you - it could be on a certain day of the week as you mention, or it can be for one week at a time. If you do it together with a prayer offering it up it makes it more of a blessing for you.

Stay-at-Home Dad of 3… is me!

As a family we don’t eat meat on any friday. Fasting from your favorite snackfood is a good one. Try not having a particular beverage one day… maybe you’re a coffee drinker… Make something different for each day of the week. That way you are fasting in a way that is a sacrifice but with enough variety that you will be more willing to continue.

One more point is that fasting does not have to be just food. Try fasting from TV for one night a week. Heck… I dare ya to try and fast from turning on the computer for one day… I bet that would be the hardest thing to fast from for just about any of us here. That really sounds like a new thread to me…Fasting from your computer for a day!!! Can you make the sacrifice???

Maybe?!

Funny you should mention the computer. I actually tried to give up the internet for lent. Very hard, but I made it. I did allow myself to check email, but didn’t do any surfing, even this forum was off limits. I found myself with more time spent with the wife and kids. Go figure.

There are lots of sacrifices you can make. You can give up snacks, meat, a fun activity you can enjoy, wearing your favorite clothing, chatting on the phone, reading before going to bed.

You can also make sacrifices by doing something you don’t want to do, such as say hello to a homeless man, give money to charity (or more money than usual), take a walk, get up early, go to bed early, visit the Tabernacle for a hour, sing a Church song, enjoy nature, eat or drink something you dislike, not quench your thirst or satisfy your hunger immediately upon getting a drink or food.

And you can make sacrifices by accepting what God gives you and takes from you, such as pain and suffering, a new bicycle or a more beautiful spouse.

How comfortable. Variety in your sacrifice. Mhhhh…
