I was recently told be some visiting Legionaire novices that there are some places downtown that offer daily confessions. Does anyone know where I can find such a place, or the next best thing? Thanks in advance!

masstimes.org has listings of Catholic churches that you can search by location. The listing for Chicago can be found at masstimes.org/dotnet/ShowChurches.aspx?type=CITYSTATERADIUS&q=&country=United+States+of+America&city=CHICAGO&countrycode=US&statecode=IL&filter=CONFESSION . From that page, scroll down and find a church with a convenient address, then click on the Web link to get that church’s web page. Most church websites have a link to Mass and Sacrament schedules, or a weekly bulletin. For example, I found these:

Sacrament of Reconciliation:
Saturdays 3 to 4 PM in the Reconciliation Room
Saturdays 4 PM - 5 PM, 6:15 to 7:15 PM, in the Cathedral confessionals
Weekdays: Monday, Tuesday, Friday at 5 PM in the Reconciliation Room
St. Peter’s in the Loop

St. Peter’s, 110 W. Madison, is the main place for confessions and Catholic ministry in the Loop. Long has been. The Franciscans have a special devotion to this sacrament.
Another public chapel in the area would include the Daughters of St. Paul bookstore (but it is small and wouldn’t likely be offering confessions to the public).
Holy Name Cathedral, obviously, North Michigan Ave. area. (Chicago & State, actually - like you don’t know where THAT is.)
Old St. Mary’s used to be in the Loop but has moved to serve the newly burgeoning “South Loop” area, and is located on Michigan and 15th, roughly.
Assumption Parish, 323 W. Illinois, is hidden in the shadows behind the Merchandise Mart. They might offer confessions prior to their noontime weekday Mass.
Catholic Charities (near the cathedral) has a chapel which is open to the public, at least at times, complete with adoration certain days.
Old St. Pat’s in what is now called “West Loop” near the train stations. Don’t know what their confession schedule is like, however.
Off the top of my head, those are the main spots downtown.

Oh, and since “downtown” can be a relative term as well as it all depending upon how far off the beaten path one wants to wander, St. John Cansius is really not very far from “downtown”, just a little over one mile west of the cathedral, roughly, and about the same distance in relation to the train stations along Milwaukee Ave.
Father Mac (Ignatius McDermott) used to have a chapel in conjunction with his ministry, which I want to say was located on the “Near West Side” somewhere, but I don’t know who took that over since he passed away.
Oh, I almost forgot, DePaul has a chapel (and noontime Mass, I think) in their building on Wabash off what is it, Adams?
Loyola has a small chapel in their new student center on Pearson and Wabash. There is also an approachable Jesuit priest who is chaplain at the business school across the street from there.

And if you’re just looking for daily confessions in town, in general, they can be found without all too much trouble. St. Mary of the Angels has an extensive schedule every week, for instance. St. Stanislaus Kostka has afternoon offerrings daily. At universities it isn’t at all difficult to find a priest around in either student minsitry or (if it is a Catholic institution) among the academic instructors, residence hall minsiters, and religious houses. Just go to a Polish parish where they are bound to have some sort of more heavy sacramental availability.
