I’m searching for new Catholic music and can’t find anything good. I don’t like mediocre rock tunes like CCM. Lately, I’ve been listening to Bach, I don’t like the instrumental stuff, Toccata is too heavy, makes me drowsy, but I love BWV 78, esp. the first movement and I love the second movement because it’s so e
ergetic, vocally driven and sits on a nice melody. I love the way Fiona Campbell sings it, but I don’t know if she’s Christian and don’t fancy listening to someone who might be popular on Aussie people’s wallpapers. I like Rifkin’s soft rendition with the falsetto voices much too. I like a couple violin and oboe concertos because they sound groovy, but really looking for something that is vocally and carries a nice tune like Wir Eilen Mit Schwachen. I will not tolerate any ghastly bass voices, thanks, I don’t mind Harnoncourt’s boy soprano he used in Wir Eilen, he sang okay-ish. I don’t like Mozart, I listened to his Nachtmusik and it turned out to be Natchmusik.

The other music I like is some secular stuff like Maggie Reilly’s Everytime We Touch, or Duffy’s Warwick Avenue but here still something had to be different enough for me to like it, so the accent was welcome, but it’s not Christian. I don’t really care for popular music otherwise. I don’t care for the the contemporary worship stuff like the Matt Maher or Sufjan Stevens or yucky stuff (to me) like Here I am, Lord.

What I like best is to listen to music that is experimental, like you get on SoundCloud, not plain distorted rock or dance electronica, but music with different sounding instrumentation with newish sounds, like Radiohead, but I stopped listening to them after the lead singer went mad and started talking about gross things in his songs. The secular world has a lot of experimental stuff, straining, I even like some stuff the Gorillaz wrote. But a search for Catholic experimental music turned up nothing valuable , some atomic opera or earthsuit or similarly named unlistenable stuff. I want music that has talent and pleasingness, dark is better.

Anyone know any good stuff? I’m grateful for any recommendations. 🙂

There’s tons of terrific Mass settings out there. One of my favorites is the Verdi Requiem Mass. This is a dress rehersal so put up with the pauses; since no one had a better understanding of Verdi than Toscanini it is well worth it. There’s also Mozart’s Requiem Mass, Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis, Schubert’s Mass in B Flat Major, and even the Lutheran Bach composed a Mass in B Minor. And of course there’s countless others out there.

At a High Mass nowadays you’d be more likely to hear something like the Orbis Factor Mass or the Mass of the Angels.

My favorite setting of the Agnus Dei from the Mass is probably Bizet’s. One of my favorite hymns is the Panis Angelicus by Franck.

I love all this sort of stuff so much I’ve joined the church choir where we’re going to hopefully be singing Gregorian Chant every week! There’s plenty of Catholic culture out there still if you know what to look for. You may prefer different singers etc. performing the same things. For example, here’s a different much more modern Verdi Requiem I don’t personally care for as much. The singing and conducting… OY!

Thanks!! I’ll be checking those out, some of that sounds beautiful. Now to learn the meaning of what they are singing. Mass of the Angels indeed.

By the way I had to change one of the singers so messed the thread up a little.

I know he’s not Catholic - he claims even to be “not particularly religious”, but the music of John Rutter is heavenly. Especially check out his “Requiem” “the Falcon” and his hymns, such as “What Sweeter Music”, “The Lord Bless You and Keep You” and “All Things Bright and Beautiful”.

Versions of all of these are viewable on youtube.

Take a look at Arvo Pärt. He is modern in that he is a 20th century composer (still alive I believe, but very elderly). He writes in a traditional and sometimes very minimal style. His music is simply beautiful. He was quite prolific so there is much to chose from.

List of work here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_works_by_Arvo_P%C3%A4rt

Some samples:

"Magnificat was composed in 1989 by Arvo Pärt. A setting of the Latin Magnificat text, it is in tintinnabuli style, which was invented by Pärt in the mid 1970s. It is scored a cappella for mixed choir: soprano solo, sopranos I and II, alto, and tenor and bass divisi. " youtube.com/watch?v=GiKNUma4dY0

Is there any good music similar to Christina Pluhar’s album Mediterraneo? I’m finding it funny and likeable.

While I do like some classical pieces by Bach and Palestrina’s Missa, I don’t feel into the Gregorian Chant. It may have been the hip thing in the medieval day, but to me, it’s sorely lacking. It’s all the same voice. I’ll just listen to Bach.

Anyway, I don’t think there’s any good modern Christian music. 😦 After scouring a lot, all the Christian music is just distorted rock and heavy metal. And it manages to sound even more uncouth than their secular counterparts. No musicality whatsoever. I guess there’s no hope of finding anything good Radiohead-esque or else.

Anyway, moving on from rock, maybe I might find something in the non-rock arena. So are there any good artists, bands like Sting & the Police, they used to be a favourite of mine??? I admit to enjoying some of their songs, I’m an Englishmen in New York…hmm. Maybe Roxette’s Fading Like A Flower, piano rock? Maybe some Wham!?
