Hi- if this is in the wrong place, I apologize!
I need some good, gentle, phrasiology about why Invitro Fertilization is wrong.
My best friend and her husband have been considering pursuing IVF. They are evangelical Christians, nondemonimational. Currently, they are having some marital problems and have put trying to conceive on hold while they work things out.
I know at some point, they are going to come back to IVF, and I would like to be prepared with some gentle, loving, but firm reasons why this practice is against God.
Some background–
I met this woman, who is TRULY my best friend, in an online adoption support group. We both adopted our children around the same time-- her son is about six months older than my daughter. She and her husband have male-factor infertility: her husband produces no sperm. Any fertility technology they pursue would be using donor sperm-- which in and of itself is a big problem in my opinion.
Adoption has really worn them down. Their son’s adoption involved a very lengthy and very emotionally taxing court battle, and they almost lost him around his first birthday, but in the end, they won the case and Baby stayed with them. I dont think either of them has the emotional resources to pursue another adoption, given what they went through the first time. At one time, they were considering adopting again, but recently, had decided it was too much for them to handle at the moment.
At which point they began discussing reproductive technology.
I LOVE my friend. I KNOW that she knows Jesus and loves Him. Frankly, I think she’s severely misguided about the character of God, which is a result of a Mormon upbringing. She turned away from Mormonism to Christianity as a young adult. I know that her beliefs are sincere, and that she does constantly seek to be obedient to God. Her marital issues center around Husbands use of pornography, and while she is definately angry and hurt, she is really trying to work to help him recover from this-- which is doing with the help and support of his wife and a church support group.
The problem is that they are Sola Scriptura people. The Bible doesnt really mention In Vitro Fertilization, so I dont have much to counter with when the discussion arises. I dont think the time is really coming up soon for them to start IVF, but in the mean time, I’d like to plant the seeds of why this is such a heinous procedure!
I dont think what I have to say will fall on deaf ears. I’m just not sure WHAT to say!
