Need RCIA type book ideas for unbaptized friend in alcohol rehab

Hello,

A friend of mine is in his 2nd week in an alcohol rehab facility.

He is:

Non baptized

Has a family hanging in the balance of his recovery.

I gave him a blessed rosary that he absolutely loves and prays with (even though he does not yet know how to pray the rosary).

He was wild in his younger years and before all this happened he was making around $100k a year in outside sales.

My question is: What kind of best selling Catholic book for a RCIA candidate can I order and mail to him while he’s in rehab?

I am hoping with his rehab complete and having read a good book about the Church he will be willing to start attending RCIA classes as he will be getting out of rehab when they RCIA classes will be starting.

RCIA would give hims some forward momentum in his recovery and he has admitted he needs to get baptized. Any ideas are appreciated.

Why not give him a Psalter. The psalms are beautiful and cover every emotion.
They’re a perfect daily prayer regimen.
If he gets accustomed to praying…and interested in Scripture…the conversion bug will come over him soon enough.

The Holy Bible is the best Catholic book out there. The Gospel according to John a good place to start.

You can also look up the story of Matt Talbot which is pretty inspirational to many.
 
I went through RCIA last year, we used Peter Kreeft’s book Catholic Christianity which does a marvelous job of summing of the CCC.

The fact that he loves his Rosary is a great thing- I had a Rosary for years before I became Catholic and I prayed with it before I learned the Rosary, I would just hold it in my hand while I said my normal prayers.

Perhaps get him a green scapular, also- two of the graces associated with that scapular is healing and conversion. Have it blessed by a priest, and then pray the green scapular prayer on his behalf every day.

I need something as simple as possible. Ryan’s not the intellectual type. I should have pointed that out.

Some kind of simple written book that will help draw him to the Church.

Ideas?

It is short and was written for people who don’t know Christ to explain who He is.

Other than that, the aforementioned Peter Kreeft book is pretty good.

I have given people like you described a Catholic edition of the Bible (usually RSV-CE) and Surprised by Truth VOL 1.

The reason for “Surprised by Truth VOL 1” is that most people when they read that book they cannot put it down. Most not all finish the book within 2 days. Then go back and read the book again and make notes. It stories of Catholic converts and it is full of Bible verses that these men and women came kicking and screaming in to the Church of God because they were honest and realized they had allegiance to God first before family and friends.

THANK YOU! 🙂 I just spent the past half hour reading over the reviews on Amazon and ordered him your book suggestion. Book should get there by Thursday Sep 3. And his Mom should be able to give him the book Sunday Sep 6. He is scheduled to get out on the 13th, although I have stressed i think he should stay for 60 days, if possible. His addiction to alcohol has been severe these past few years. If he doesn’t make a successful rehab (dropped out on day 5 of last rehab) he will probably die so this is very serious. First facility was not the right fit; now he is at the right place, though.

I’m pretty sure his mother is also not baptized as she kind of hinted on our last phone call with progress report on how Ryan is doing. She likes the rosary too so maybe I can get her to read his book as well when he is done with it.
