I signed up to bring a meal to a family that just had a new baby. I need some good recipe ideas. Probably something that can be put together early in the day and they just need to bake it that night.

If someone brought meals to you, what were good ones?

Would the meal be just for adults or are there other children?

Sorry, I’m not the world’s greatest cook but I do know that meals with pasta and meat with rice dishes tend to appeal to a wide variety of ages and tastes.

24 years ago, a friend brought me and my husband a meal when our first baby was born. I still remember it, probably not so much for the excellence of the meal, though it was very good, as for the love behind it.

It was spaghetti with meatballs, a tossed salad, jello and cake.

How about some baked ziti with meatballs…Easy, tasty, and even better the next day after it all soaks in!!!

It depends on the weather in your part of the country, as what would go over here might be too heavy where you are.

Homemade (vegetable, minestrone, split pea and ham) soup, french bread, a stick of butter, and “poke cake” where you pour Jello over the cake and let it sit in the refrigerator, then frost it with Cool Whip.

Beef stew, french bread, a stick of butter, and chocolate chip cookies.

Chili (big pot), cornbread, sour cream, chopped onions, a stick of butter, and Jello with fruit.

A BIG 7 or 8 layer salad which includes meat (bacon AND chicken), a bottle of dressing, french bread, a stick of butter, and fruit pie.

You can never go wrong with a stick of real butter included in the meal!👍

I agree. My go to meal for any ocasion that I need to bring someone a meal is baked ziti with meat sauce. It freezes wonderfully, too. If someone is sick or recovering from surgery I usually make homemade chicken soup.🙂

I was going to suggest casserole. Of course, that leaves the field wide open for ideas. These, for the most part, can be fixed ahead and frozen. Nice and convienent. As long as you aren’t the one who puts it together!! 👍

Chicken spaghetti:

four chicken breasts (use leftover chicken or prepare it however you like, baked, poached…)

two cans of cream of … soup (I use either mushroom or chicken or one of each)

one can of Rotel tomatoes (you can use just diced tomatoes if you think it would be too spicy

package of spaghetti

one onion

three stalks of celery

one green pepper

eight ounce package of shredded cheese

Directions: Prepare spaghetti according to package

Saute onion, pepper, and celery in olive oil until tender.
Combine in a mixing bowl the sauted veggies, the cooked chicken, the two cans of cream of …, the can of tomatoes, the spaghetti, and S&P to taste. Refrigerate overnight to let all the flavors blend together.

The next morning place in a 9X13 baking dish and top with grated cheese. Then when they’re ready, bake it for 30 minutes (or until bubbly all the way through) in a 400 degree oven. Also can be frozen, then thawed and add the cheese and bake.

Tastes pretty good. Makes a lot so you could even break that up into two smaller casseroles and keep one in your freezer for the next time – or eat it yourself 😃

When my SIL died, my brother had a refrigerator FULL of lasagne.

If it’s a situation where a number of people are supplying meals to someone, I almost always avoid pasta.

A big sub sandwhich w/ chips or chili w/ fritos and corn are good.

I love the big sub idea!!!

This thread made me go into the kitchen and make chicken minestrone. I am going to go get a loaf of french bread, and you already know what is sitting on the counter getting soft- that’s right, BUTTER!

When my first child was born I received this meal from a friend and it is still a family favorite today…

Barb’s BBQ Roast, Cream Cheese Mashed Potatoes, Peas

3-4 pound shoulder roast
3/4 cup ketchup
3/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1 envelope dry onion soup

Combine last three ingredients, pour over roast, crock pot for 8 hours on low.

Serve with mashed potatoes w/ 8 oz. of cream cheese and 1/2 stick of butter and 2 T of chives mixed in.
Steam up some green peas and season w/ butter salt and pepper.

MMMmmmmmmmmmm

I’d suggest a nice baked ham, sliced. They can then use have ham as an entree, or use it for sandwiches and breakfasts.

A pan of Mac and Cheese, some veg, some cookies or fruit.

Then, add a box of ziptop freezer bags and some of those disposable plastic containers. When people bring in food, seems that there are leftovers that need to be stored and providing containers for those is a huge help.
