Dear Friends:

Although I’ve been a Catholic for 27 years, I’ve never delved into the Deuterocanon. So, please, can any of you recommend a basic introduction that is faithful to Catholic teaching? Thanks in advance for your assistance. God bless you all!

@adf417, I’m not familiar with that book. So thank you for letting me know about it.
@TheLittleLady, thanks for that information. That’s definitely a great place to start.

Written at the college level but within the grasp of many, a new book which is in high demand is The Catholic Introduction to the Bible: Old Testament by Bergsma and Pitre. I’m about 700 pages into the 970 page book.

It covers each of the books in the Catholic Old Testament from a Catholic perspective. You can just start off with those individual books (in separate chapters) as you wish. The “deuterocanonical” books were accepted by the Church long before there was any Protestant controversy or doubt about them.

If you are new to Bible study, this is the book to have at your side. The way it’s organized, I think the best way to use it is to read it alongside your Bible. Specifically, they have an overview of each book and you may want to read the Bible book verses as they are discussed in the overview ( rather than reading this commentary before or after the Bible book). That’s one way; of course, it’s up to you.
