Need Recommendation of a good book on Church History

Any recommendations on a good easy to read book on Church History to give a Protestant? One that explains the Early Church?? My dad said he’ll read one and also some Protestant friends.

Look into these orthodox Catholic books to explain the faith… there really isn’t 1 book which can sum up all of Catholic history. That amount of information wouldn’t probably even fit in a dozen huge university libraries.

Also check out scripturecatholic.com and you can print out Catholic tracts, and of course catholic.com and print out those tracts as well. Of course I also recommend a Catechism of the Catholic Church and the New Catholic Answers Bible. You can also get free study courses from the Catholic Home Study Service operated by Fr. Oscar Lukefahr. I recommend “We Believe… A Survey of the Catholic Faith” to start out with. You can also get free apologetics CDs from the Mary Foundation. I also highly recommend listening to Catholic radio such as avemariaradio.net, releventradio.com & ewtn.com.

You may be asking a bit much. You are asking for an easy way to understand 2,000 years of church history. It will require more effort or determination than that.

That being said, if your Dad and his Protestant friends are sincerely interested and are willing to put some time into it, you could start with “The Faith of the Early Fathers”, by William A. Jurgens. It is a three volume set. You do not need to read all of it, but it is great to have around whenever you would like to cross-reference a topic with what the early fathers might have said about it.

Secondly, I would recommend “Triumph, The Power and the Glory of the Catholic Church,” by H.W. Crocker III. It is written by a convert from the Anglican faith, and is about 420 pages. But Mr. Crocker does an excellent job of covering 2,000 years of Church history identifying both the successes and the failures of certain people and events in that history.

This may not be what you wanted to hear, but you only get out of something what you are willing to put into it.

I would recommend Crossing the Tiber by Steve Ray, though that may be one you’ll want to hold off on until your dad has read more about the early Church because it’s a conversion story. But, Steve Ray does talk a lot about the early Church in this book. In fact, the rest of the title is “Evangelical Protestants Discover the Historic Church”.

There is a book called The Story of the Church, Her Founding, Mission and Progress. A textbook in Church History. Published by Tan Books. First published 1935 then in 1980. Carries both Imprimatur and Nihil Obstat.

this above book is online for free, it is protestant, but is fairly objective. Its strength is the use of primary documents.

I don’t know about this one. I’ve read some of it and it’s VERY Protestant. I wouldn’t recommend this to someone you’re trying to convert to Catholicism.

Hi Rand, most protestants are very ignorant of history because they don’t have interrest. By having them read a “protestant” history that is very document orientated may be the only way to get them to read primary documents for themselves.

there is also, the internet history project online too.
