Need Reliable Recommendation

Hello, I am looking for a reliable and widely accepted book of sorts that can be used as a companion to the bible. This book would clarify or interpret in plain language what passages mean in a way that person could understand today.

You are looking for a “Catholic Study Bible” with commentary.

One good one is the “Ignatius Catholic Study Bible” (which is not yet available for all books…)

The Navarre with commentary is good, and also the Ignatius Study Bible in which each book of the Bible is published as a separate volume.

Is this the Bible that Ignatious press is looking to publish this fall? I believe that much of the New Testament commentary is supplied by Scott Hahn too. I am personally holding out for that one.

If you are looking for a more critical approach (historical, literary analysis, etc.), I would reccomend Fr. Raymond Brown’s “New Jerome Biblical Commentary”

This is a very solid analysis of the bible, and it is written from a Catholic perspective. However, it is rather scholarly. It will give you amazing amounts of context and background information from which to read the text, but it does not provide very much in the way of Catholic theological understanding or spirituality.

Yes, Scott Hahn was one of the contributors to the commentary that I was referring to. I didn’t realize that they were going to finish the whole thing by this fall, though…
